Update on Functional AIIMS in the Country

Posted On: 05 APR 2022 3:56PM by PIB Delhi

Under the Pradhan Mantri Swasthya Suraksha Yojana (PMSSY), setting up of 22 new AIIMS has been approved. Six of these new AIIMS, sanctioned in Phase-I of the scheme, started their services prior to 2013 and are now fully functional.  Another 16 AIIMS were approved during 2015 to 2020. This includes AIIMS at Raebareli which was originally approved in 2009, but the Revised Cost Estimate was approved in 2017.  Out of these 16 AIIMS, MBBS classes and OPD services have started in 10 new AIIMS. In another 2 AIIMS, only MBBS classes have started. Limited IPD services have also been operationalized in six AIIMS.

AIIMS at New Delhi has been functioning for more than six decades and has established itself as a premier institute in the country and internationally in areas of teaching/learning, research and patient care.  As compared to AIIMS New Delhi, new AIIMS set up under PMSSY are at different stages of establishment. However, in six AIIMS, approved in phase –I of PMSSY, i.e., AIIMS at Rishikesh, Jodhpur, Raipur, Patna, Bhopal, Bhubaneshwar, all the 18 specialty departments envisioned for these AIIMS are functional. Further, all the 17 super-specialty departments are functional in AIIMS at Bhubaneswar, Jodhpur and Rishikesh, whereas the number of such Departments functional in AIIMS at Bhopal, Patna and Raipur are 14, 14 and 13, respectively. In AIIMS at Gorakhpur & Raebareli, MBBS classes, OPD services and partial IPD services have started.

The Union Minister of State for Health and Family Welfare, Dr. Bharti Pravin Pawar stated this in a written reply in the Rajya Sabha today.
