The Income Tax Department, Mumbai, has inducted 97 accomplished sportspersons under the sports quota, further strengthening its commitment to recognising sporting excellence and nurturing high-calibre talent in public service. The appointment letters were formally handed over to the newly inducted sportspersons by the Principal Chief Commissioner of Income Tax, Mumbai, Shri Alok Kumar, at Aayakar Bhawan, Mumbai today.

Applications were invited vide Notification dated 07.01.2026 for 97 vacancies. The recruitment attracted 3,595 applications from sportspersons across various disciplines. Following rigorous scrutiny and evaluation in accordance with the prescribed criteria, 97 candidates were selected on merit.

A significant highlight of the recruitment is that over 80% of the selected sportspersons have represented or participated at the international level, reflecting the exceptional calibre of talent joining the Department.

The notable inductees include Shri Tanush Kotian, an all-rounder of Mumbai Ranji Cricket Team who has also been part of India Test Squad, Shri Abhishek who secured two Gold Medals at the 1^st World Yogasana Sports Championship, Ahmedabad (2026), Ms. Tejal Hasabnis, player of Indian Women’s Cricket team, Shri Akash, a para-sportsperson, has won Team Gold Medal at the World Shooting Para Sport World Cup, New Delhi (2024) and Gold Medal at the WSPS World Cup, Al Ain, Dubai (2025).

The recruitment marks a significant milestone in the Income Tax Department’s efforts to promote sporting excellence while providing accomplished athletes an opportunity to serve the nation. Speaking on the occasion, Principal Chief Commissioner of Income Tax, Mumbai, Shri Alok Kumar assured the new inductees that they will have every opportunity to continue with their sports practice and competitions. He also stated that the Income Tax Department, Mumbai, expects the newly inducted sportspersons to bring to public service the same discipline, determination and excellence that have distinguished their sporting careers.

As part of the induction programme, the newly recruited sportspersons were briefed on their roles, responsibilities and applicable government rules.
