Celebrating a Century of Wildlife and Wonder: MIFF 2026 Honours David Attenborough

Mumbai, 20 June 2026

Marking David Attenborough’s centenary celebrations, the 19th Mumbai International Film Festival (MIFF 2026) organized a special screening of Secrets of Wild India directed by Duncan Chard and narrated by Attenborough himself. The series is an acclaimed three-part historical documentary made by the legendary naturalist which showcases the immense biodiversity of India across three extreme ecosystems — lush jungles, towering mountains and arid deserts.

Of the three parts, the Desert Lions chapter focuses on the harsh, unforgiving desert of northwest India, where only the best adapt to survive. The documentary stands out for its excellent cinematography, including a symbolic visual tricolour representation of the Indian flag woven into its imagery. Its narrative technique unfolds like storytelling, making it a compelling watch, with Attenborough describing the desert in his own words as Rudyard Kipling’s Jungle Book in flesh and blood. Descriptions are also presented in large, crisp, easy-to-follow text throughout the narrative.

The film consistently presents the binary between the Predator and prey, without disturbing the natural hierarchical food chain. At the same time it continuous to explore the temperament and intelligence of each species. The film also captures a striking moment of contrast where a tigress, otherwise a lethal predator, is shown sparing a defiant baby deer rather than attacking it - a quiet testament to maternal instinct transcending the predator-prey divide.

A particularly intimate sequence captures tigers mating in multiple phases. This is then shown in contrast with the unique, monotonous dim mating calls of insects while digging into tree barks to extract sweet juice. The narrative captures animals such as the gaur, Hanuman langur and wild dogs alongside more familiar ones that are often not considered aesthetic enough to capture. Finally, the documentary also explores how extreme desert heat shapes wildlife behavior — animals like the wild pig find relief in mud, while deer risk their lives simply to drink water.

Attenborough’s keen observation and deep knowledge of the of the animal kingdom makes this documentary a truly delightful watch. In times of growing anthropocentricity, it is a refreshing deep dive into understanding intricacies of the world we share with other beings.
