Today, 25th anniversary of ‘Taal’ was celebrated at IFFI 2024, with a special screening of the movie followed by a press conference by the team of ‘Taal’ including director Subhash Ghai, singer Kavita Krishnamurthy, and actor Jividha Sharma.
Shri Ghai said in his opening remarks that it is rare to find someone who has not seen this movie, considering the huge popularity of the movie to this day.
“Certain films have long life and they resonate with audiences. When you are feeling down, you would want to watch a movie like Taal”, said lead actor of the movie Anil Kapoor in a video message.
“Subhash Ghai is the Master Showman of the industry who created many a magnum opus. We should all watch Taal to understand Sh. Ghai’s vision about the big screen”, added Saurabh Shukla through the video message who had also acted in the film.
‘Taal’ was the first Indian film to break into Variety's top 20 box-office list. Subash Ghai while narrating how he convinced A. R Rahman to compose music for this film had said to Rahman “I want to make this musical film. That means you are the hero of my film and I am its director”!
Mr. Ghai gave more insights into his vision for the movie saying that the lead character of the girl goes through 7 stages of development till the film comes to an end, symbolizing the 7 ‘Surs’ (musical notes) that are associated with this film.
The film shows the struggle between the purity of love represented by Akshay Khanna and material world represented by Anil Kapoor, added Shri Ghai.
“Music, composition, acting, costume all was in sync with each other in this movie because I was not under pressure from any big studios who finance films these days, neither was I running behind box office figures. When a director is overly worried about the finances of the film it will definitely eat into his focus on directorial work”, lamented Shri Ghai.
Kavita Krishnamurthy sang for hours at stretch to get that perfect tone, revealed Subhash Ghai elaborating on the dedication of artists while the film was being made.
“I tried to sing in a way which will appeal not only to Indian listeners but to listeners across the globe,” said noted Singer Kavita Krishnamurthy recounting the superhit songs she had rendered for ‘Taal’.
“I was new to the industry, and Taal became a perfect opportunity to learn the craft from the best in the industry” said Jividha Sharma who played the role of Ila (one of the sisters of the lead actor played by Aishwarya Rai) in the movie, as closing remarks.
