In an intelligence led operation, officers of DRI, intercepted an import consignment at Nhava Sheva Port suspected to contain firecrackers and on examination of the same found firecrackers concealed under the guise of declared goods, namely “Bottle & Wallpaper.”

Seized firecracker 288 Gatling

The detailed examination led to recovery of 19,800 pieces of firecrackers (known as 288 Gatling), weighing approximately 10,000 Kg with a market value of about Rs. 3 crore. Except for the first three rows containing the declared goods, the container was found to be filled predominantly with firecrackers. The firecrackers, along with the declared cover cargo, were seized under the provisions of the Customs Act, 1962.

The import of firecrackers is 'Restricted' under the Foreign Trade Policy and requires valid authorisation from DGFT, and requisite license from the Petroleum and Explosives Safety Organization (PESO) under the Explosives Rules, 2008.

During the course of investigation, the key syndicate member, who was orchestrating and attempting the clandestine clearance of the said goods, has been arrested under the Customs Act, 1962.

The operation underscores DRI’s continued focus on detecting misdeclaration and clandestine import of restricted goods through commercial cargo channels.
