To nurture future professionals for the development of National Highway infrastructure, NHAI has invited applications for the two-month ‘Summer Internship Programme 2026’. Scheduled between May and July 2026, the programme builds upon the successful implementation of the NHAI Winter Internship Programme and the ongoing six-month internship programme, which aims at providing students with meaningful, hands-on experience within India’s largest National Highway development ecosystem. NHAI has now expanded its ‘Internship Programme’ to include multiple disciplines along with the civil engineering domain.

Under the expanded framework, the Summer Internship Programme will be tentatively scheduled from 4th May to 5th July 2026, depending upon the academic calendar, and will include a wide range of engineering and technical disciplines such as Civil Engineering, Information Technology, Computer Science & Engineering, Electronics and Communication Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Instrumentation Engineering, and Data Science/Artificial Intelligence, and related disciplines. In addition, the programme has been extended to non-technical streams, including Law (BA LLB), Commerce and Sciences (BA/B.Com/B.Sc), Management (MBA in HR, Finance, Marketing), Mass Communication, and Library Science, thereby broadening participation across diverse academic backgrounds. Selected interns will be stationed at designated NHAI field offices or at NHAI Headquarters in New Delhi, under the mentorship of experienced NHAI officials.

Eligible candidates include full-time undergraduate and postgraduate students from premier institutions, including top-ranked institutes under the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF), leading law universities, management institutions, and reputed mass communication institutes. A stipend of Rs. 20,000 per month will be provided to selected interns, along with a certificate of completion upon successful completion of the internship. Interested students are encouraged to apply through the Internship Portal by April 15, 2026. Detailed guidelines, application procedures, and information on available projects are accessible on the NHAI Internship Portal: https://internshipsatnhai.digitalindiacorporation.in/

The application process has commenced through the dedicated NHAI Internship Portal, featuring separate logins for students and institutions. Students are required to submit their applications online, providing academic and personal details, and may indicate preferences for project locations where applicable. Institutes will be responsible for verifying and approving student applications on the portal to confirm their enrolment status. Only institute-approved applications will be considered for further selection. Final allocation of interns to projects will be undertaken by NHAI based on preferences and availability.

To further strengthen industry-academia engagement, NHAI has requested institutes to actively disseminate information about the programme among eligible students, facilitate timely application submissions, and nominate faculty coordinators to support the process and serve as a point of contact.

The earlier phase of the programme, launched in December 2025, witnessed strong participation, with 244 civil engineering students undertaking the one-month winter internship and 149 students enrolled in the six-month term internship from January till June 2026. Building on this success, the expanded programme will further foster the creation of a skilled workforce for the infrastructure sector.

The initiative underscores NHAI’s continued commitment to capacity building and skill development, aimed at preparing the next generation of professionals to contribute towards the development of National Highway infrastructure in the country.
