Objectives of Coastal Aquaculture Farms

The coastal aquaculture farms are such units where activities including culturing of fish, crustacean,mollusc, finfish, seaweed or any other aquatic life is done under controlled conditions in ponds, pens,cages, rafts, enclosures or otherwise, in saline or brackish water in coastal areas and includes nurseryrearing (but does not include fresh water aquaculture) to produce and supply nutritive, healthy and safe aquaculture produce for human consumption and/or for commercial purpose.
The details of Coastal Aquaculture Authority was set up as per the provisions of the Coastal Aquaculture Authority Act, 2005 to ensure that the coastal aquaculture activities are carried out in a sustainablemanner and it does not cause any detriment to the coastal environmentand to protect the livelihood of various sections of the people living in the coastal areas. The coastal aquaculture farms are set up by aqua-farmers,whereas the Coastal Aquaculture Authority registers the coastal aquaculture farms for their regulation as per the provisions of the Coastal Aquaculture Authority Act, 2005 (amended in 2023).As on 30thOctober 2024, the Coastal Aquaculture Authority has registered 46,976 coastal aquaculture farms across 9 coastal states and 3 Union Territories in India.
The coastal aquaculture farms registered with the Coastal Aquaculture Authority in Andhra Pradesh, during the last three years and the current year, year-wise and coastal district-wise are placed at Annexure.
The coastal aquaculture is predominantly dominated by the shrimp aquaculture (L. vannamei and P. monodon species), which is a profitable venture and having export potential. The coastal aquaculture sector is providing employment to the coastal communities including fishers in the units such as farms, hatcheries, feed plants, processing plants, cold storage units and other allied industries.
The aquaculture shrimp (frozen shrimp) is the major item in the seafood exports and contributing largely to the seafood exports in terms of quantity and value as detailed below:
