Progress achieved in Medical Education


Increase of 82% in medical colleges from 387 before 2014 to 706 as of now

Increase of 112% in MBBS seats from 51,348 before 2014 to 1,08,940 at present

Increase of 127% in PG seats from 31,185 before 2014 to 70,645 currently

Out of 157 approved New Medical Colleges, 108 are currently functional

Undergraduate courses have commenced in 19 of 22 AIIMS

The Government has increased number of medical colleges and subsequently increased MBBS/PG seats. There is an increase of 82% in medical colleges from 387 before 2014 to 706 as of now. Further, there is an increase of 112% in MBBS seats from 51,348 before 2014 to 1,08,940 as of now, there is also an increase of 127% in PG seats from 31,185 before 2014 to 70,645 as of now.

The Ministry of Health & Family Welfare administers a Centrally Sponsored Scheme (CSS) for ‘Establishment of new medical colleges attached with existing district/referral hospitalsÂ’ with preference to underserved areas and aspirational districts, where there is no existing Government or private medical college with fund sharing between the Centre and State Governments in the ratio of 90:10 for North Eastern and Special Category States and 60:40 for others. Under the Scheme,  all the envisaged 157 medical colleges have been approved in three phases, Out of these, 108 medical colleges have become functional. The state-wise and year-wise details of medical colleges approved under the scheme and funds released to these colleges in last three years are as under:

In addition to this, under the Central Sector Scheme for setting up of new AIIMS, 22 AIIMS have been approved. Undergraduate courses have started in 19 of these.

The Union Minister of State for Health and Family Welfare, Dr. Bharati Pravin Pawar stated this in a written reply in the Lok Sabha today.
