GARBAGE FREE CITIES UNDER SBM-U 2.0

Government of India launched the Swachh Bharat Mission-Urban (SBM-U) on October 2, 2014 with the objective of achieving Safe Sanitation and for scientific processing of Municipal Solid Waste (MSW) generated in the urban areas of the country.

To carry forward the progress made, Swachh Bharat Mission (SBM-U) 2.0 has been launched on October 1, 2021 for a period of five years with a vision of achieving Garbage Free Status for all cities through 100% source segregation, door to door collection and scientific management of all fractions of waste including safe disposal in scientific landfills. It is also aims at remediation of all legacy dumpsites and converting them into green zones.

The estimated cost of implementation of SBM-U 2.0 for its various components is ₹1,41,600 crore. The Central Share will be ₹36,465 crore. The balance amount shall be contributed by individuals as beneficiary contribution, States and UTs/ ULBs/ Private Sector under PPP.

Sanitation is a State subject under 7th schedule of the constitution. Hence, it is the responsibility of State/ULBs to plan, design, execute and operate sanitation projects in the urban areas of the country. However, Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (MoHUA) has been facilitating by providing additional financial and technical support. SBM is being implemented uniformly in all States and ULBs including Madhya Pradesh. The CS funds are allocated to the States/UTs for the entire Mission period. As such city-wise or district wise details are not maintained at national level.
