The Graduation Ceremony of the students of 2017 Batch of ESIC Medical College & Hospital, K. K. Nagar, Chennai was held on 14.07.2023. Shri Bhupender Yadav, Union Minister for Labour & Employment and Environment, Forest & Climate Change was the Chief Guest during the event. Shri Rameswar Teli, Minister of State for Labour & Employment and Petroleum & Natural Gas, Govt. of India also graced the occasion. Dr. Rajendra Kumar, DG, ESIC and Shri Alok Chandra, SLEA, MoL&E were also present during the event. 

Merit certificates and scrolls were awarded to the graduates of ESIC Medical College by the Union Ministers. Congratulating the young graduates, Shri Bhupender Yadav said that the Union Govt. is focused towards creating an infrastructure where workers of the country can easily avail the medical care benefits.

In his address to the graduating students, Union Minister encouraged the young graduates to render medical services to the deprived sections of our country. He said that ESIC hospitals are an important cog in the wheel of the mechanism through which India provides social security for its workers.  He  added that the Union Govt. is ensuring social security in the life and safety at workplaces for workers. He further said that with the implementation of the Social Security Code, the responsibility of ESIC is going to increase manifold.

While addressing the graduating doctors, Shri Rameswar Teli, Union Minister of State said that ESIC is committed to provide best medical care and comprehensive social security to the workforce. He urged the doctors to treat patients not only with the knowledge that they possess but also with empathy. 

Earlier in the day, the Union Minister inaugurated new facilities such as- “Anti Retro-Viral Therapy, Integrated Counselling and Training and Tele-Medicine Center”. With the availability of these facilities, ESI beneficiaries can now avail these services with ease. He also launched various programmes, viz. ‘ESIC Swasthya Mitra’, ‘Family Adoption Program’ by the MBBS students of the college’ and ‘Voluntary Body Donation Program'.

DG ESIC, while addressing the graduating doctors said that, ESIC institutions are run by the contributions received from workers who belong to low wages bracket, and therefore; passing out from the college run by their money endows special responsibility to take care of persons belonging from lower income strata of society.  He further said that ESIC is working with the vision of utilizing latest innovation in medical services, to provide best training to doctors and best equipment in medical colleges & hospitals.

Dr. Kalidas D. Chavan, Dean, ESIC Medical College & Hospital, K. K. Nagar administered the Hippocratic Oath to the graduating  students. The event witnessed presence of faculties of medical college, students and their parents alongwith officers of Ministry of Labour & Employment, Govt. of India and ESIC.

ESIC Medical College & Hospital, K. K. Nagar was established by the Govt. of Tamil Nadu as an ESIS Hospital in 1977.  Subsequently, it was taken over by ESIC in 1991 to function as ESIC Model Hospital.

 

The sprawling hospital campus is spread over an area of 13 acres. In 2011, Post Graduate Institute of Medical Sciences & Research (PGIMSR) was established and in 2013, the MBBS curriculum for 100 annual admissions was introduced. Subsequently, the annual Intake has been increased to 125 in 2020 wherein 25 seats are allocated for Wards of Insured Persons. In-principle approval has been granted by the Tamil Nadu Dr MGR Medical University for increasing the annual intake to 150 for which admissions will be conducted from the Academic Year 2023-24 following NMC approval.

 

Presently, there are twenty-seven PG seats in 8 Broad Specialities. Further, the Institute has obtained in principle approval from the affiliating University to start PG courses in six more disciplines namely, Anatomy, Physiology, Biochemistry, Pharmacology, Community Medicine and Ophthalmology. (2 Seats in each Speciality). Super Specialty services are provided in Endocrinology, Cardiology, Cardio Thoracic Vascular Surgery, Neurology, Neuro Surgery, Nephrology, Medical Gastroenterology, Urology, Plastic surgery, Vascular surgery, Paediatric surgery, Oncology (Medical & Surgical), Interventional Radiology, Rheumatology, Reproductive Medicine. In house diagnostic services like USG, CT Scan, MRI, X ray, Colour Doppler, VDRL, and IVP are available under one roof. 99 students of 2017 batch graduated today and were awarded the certificate.
