"Surmounting Challenges" reflects engineering hurdles faced during Phase-3 Delhi Metro

Our movie is a catalyst for metro projects in the country: Anuj Dayal

Panaji, 23 November 2021

From being the lifeline of Delhi to reducing the carbon footprints and fatal accidents, Delhi Metro is touted as one world class rapid transit system in all aspect. But are we all aware of the major challenges that the department encountered during the construction? Well, you have to watch the film ‘Surmounting Challenges’ for that.

Addressing a presser on the sidelines of IFFI 52, Director of the film Satish Pande said, “Surmounting Challenges is based on Phase-3 of the Delhi Metro, for which the construction started in 2011 and ended around 2020. We were shooting all the developments continuously for these 10 years. After completion we prepared the script in close coordination with departments like Engineering and PR.”

Satish said that the film reflects various major challenges that the project faced and the way department had overcome those.

Narrating his association with metro, the National award winning Director of the film ‘The Dream Fulfilled – Memories of the Engineering Challenges’ said that his bonding with metro is very old and he made his first film on Delhi Metro 27 years back on the broad theme ‘Why Delhi needs a metro? ’

“I have started my journey from there. I have made films on Phase-1 and Phase-2 of Delhi Metro. I have also made movies on Mumbai, Nagpur, Pune, Lucknow, Kanpur, Gorakhpur, Agra and Jaipur Metro too”, he added.

He said that the main film of ‘Surmounting Challenges’ is of 2 hrs duration, which is very technical and can be of immense importance to IIT students and engineers. The current film is a shorter version of that.

Speaking to media, Producer Anuj Dayal said that Calcutta metro was a difficult experience and there was lot of disturbance to the city.

“We took care of that, when we constructed Delhi Metro.  We did the detailed environmental impact assessment before the construction. As a result of this, Carbon footprint has decreased. There is also reduction in the number of fatal accidents. So the socio-economic benefits of the metro project is remarkable”, he added.

Responding to a query Anuj said that Community interaction programme was conducted before starting the construction. It was a continuous communication process through which problems of all sorted out.

“People were sceptical about the metro at the beginning. But it was a success and now other metros are looking forward to us. Our movie was a catalyst regarding this”, he said.

About the Film

While Delhi Metro’s Phase I and II laid the foundation of a robust mass rapid transit system, Phase III made the metro accessible to major localities of Delhi. But it was also the toughest in terms of major civil engineering challenges it encountered. The 160 km-long stretch saw work on 11 different corridors with 30 mammoth tunnel boring machines and a workforce of nearly 30,000. This film highlights how DMRC overcame such engineering challenges with out of the box solutions.
