Naval Aviation Museum Goa – A Photo Feature

The museum is one-of-a-kind in Asia and has been suggested to be among the top five places to visit in Goa. It has won the 'Travellers Choice Award' by Trip Advisor in 2020. Started with a humble collection of eight aircraft in 1998, it has grown over the years, adding a wide variety of aircraft and other exhibits, and portraying the historic feats of naval aviation through slick audio-visual aids.

The fully refurbished Naval Aviation Museum at Dabolim, Goa, was dedicated to aviation enthusiasts on 04 April 2022. In its new avatar, the museum leads visitors through a magnificent journey of naval aviation with much-enhanced features and newly-upgraded facilities.

While the wall named 'The First, The Legends' celebrates trend-setters, 'Drishti' is a pictorial representation of air operations in the 1971 Indo-Pak war. There is a wall dedicated to 'Goa Liberation' as well.

President’s honour

Honourable president of India Shri Ram Nath Kovind awarded presidents colour to the Indian naval aviation at ceremonial parade on 06 September 2021. A special cover was released by the postal department

Reflecting the impressive transformation of naval aviation over the years, the museum's carefully curated facilities include 'Adhvan' - a timeline history of naval aviation, 'Adwitiya' - a glimpse of air stations and squadrons of the Indian Navy, 'Sashakt' - a peek into aviation support units and 'Vimaan' - an elegant collection of contemporary and vintage aircraft models.

ROLLS ROYCE PEGASUS

THE ROLLS ROYCE PEGASUS IS A TWIN SPOOL TURBOFAN ENGINE, ORIGINALLY DESIGNED BY BRISTOL SIDDELEY AND MANUFACTURED BY ROLLS ROYCE. IT WAS WORLD'S FIRST SHORT TAKE-OFF AND VERTICAL LANDING (V/STOL) ENGINE.

KAMOV-25

KAMOV-25 IS A RUSSIAN ORIGIN HELICOPTER WITH A PRIMARY ROLE OF ANTI SUBMARINE WARFARE. IT WAS ALSO USED FOR PROVIDING SEARCH AND RESCUE COVER BEYOND THE REACH OF CHETAK. IT HAS PNEUMATIC AND HYDRAULIC SYSTEMS FOR VARIOUS SERVICES. THE KAMOV-25 AIRCRAFT WAS FIRST INDUCTED IN INDIA IN 1980. IT'S A UNIQUE HELICOPTER WITH TWIN COAXIAL CONTRA ROTATING MAIN ROTORS AND DOES NOT HAVE TAIL ROTOR.

Lockheed L1049

 SUPER CONSTELLATION

The super constellation first flew in commercial service in December 1951 and could accommodate 10 cabin class passengers. Air India operated these aircraft on international routes till 1961. Thereafter, nine aircraft joined Indian air force no. 6 squadron at Pune. In 1976, five super connie were inducted in naval air squadron 312 at goa and carried out maritime reconnaissance mission till 1983.

NENE ENGINE

The Rolls-Royce Nene is a 1940s British centrifugal compressor turbojet engine. It was named after the river ‘Nene’ in keeping with the company's tradition of naming its jet engines after rivers. It was Rolls-Royce’s third jet engine to enter production and first ran less than 6 months from the start of design. The team started with the deletion of the piston engine, with its replacement, a single Rolls-Royce Nene turbojet engine. It was first used in sea hawks which introduced in Indian navy in march 1953 and retired in 1983.

Westland Sea King

Among the most potent weapon platforms in the Naval inventory is the Seaking helicopter. This versatile and advanced multi role aircraft has taken modern age maritime warfare to theatres well beyond the nation’s shores. On 26 Jul 71, the first Sea King landed on INS Vikrant. From then on the indomitable team of Harpoons and ‘Mother’ (the carrier) saw a series of firsts. The first operational ASW mission was flown on 18 Oct 71. On 31 Nov 71, while on an ‘Advance Screen’, a Sea King picked up a suspected submarine contact and carried out a Vectored attack for the first time.

Torpedo MK-44

Torpedo MK-44 s an electrically self-propelled anti-submarine weapon dropped from air by Sea King helicopter. These Torpedoes are designed to attack Submarines travelling up to a speed of 25 Knots at a depth of 50 to 3000 ft. As it is an active homing weapon having reception to any noise in its frequency range. It will continue to search in a helloes path to find an object.

DART MK-21

The Rolls-Royce RB.53 Dart is a turboprop engine designed and manufactured by Rolls-Royce Limited. First run in 1946, it powered the Vickers Viscount on its maiden flight in 1948. Following the company's convention for naming gas turbine engines after rivers, this turboprop engine design was named after the River Dart. The dart was also produced under licence in India by Hindustan aeronautics limited (HAL). Dart mk-21 engine. Technical drawing of dart mk-21 was developed and designed on 04 April 1945, before the hostilities of world war II ended. Bréguet 1050 Alizé of the Indian Navy is powered by the Rolls Royce Dart Engine.

Sea Harrier

Single seater V/STOL close support and reconnaissance aircraft suitable for operation from ship. The first harrier aircraft flew in Dec 1967. Decision to proceed with the development of marine version of the harrier was taken in May 1975. Subsequently designed to sea harrier. The sea harrier made its first flight on 20 Aug 1978, the first sea harrier arrived at the INS Hansa on 16 Dec 1983.

RZ 13 MISSILE

This is a short-range, infrared homing Air-to-Air missile developed by the Soviet Union, It is similar in appearance and function to the American Aim-9 Sidewinder from which it was reverse-engineered. Although, since then it has been replaced by more modern missile in frontline service, it saw widespread service in many nations. RZ-13 missiles were used during the indo-Pakistan War of 1971 by the Indian Air Force; they were integrated on Mig-21FL.

Three-seater carrier borne anti-submarine and reconnaissance aircraft. The first prototype flew in Oct 1956 and the first aircraft was delivered to the French navy in 1959. The Alizé was inducted in Indian navy on march 21, 1961.

CHETAK (ALOUETTE III)

A versatile general-purpose helicopter which was initially inducted for Search And Rescue (SA R)mission from aircraft carrier in 1964. Later on, it was used in all possible roles such as pilot training, SAR, small deck operation, anti-submarine operation, air ambulance, passenger and vertical replenishment at sea.

FIRE FLY AIRCRAFT

Two-seater carrier borne aircraft first flew on 04 march 1943. Inducted in Indian navy for fighter training and subsequently converted for target towing duties. It was part of ‘

INAS 550, commissioned on 17 Jan, 1959.

de Havilland Dove

Dove is a light transport aircraft used for variety of roles all over the world. The dove was procured by the Indian navy from the Indian air force in 1965 to replace the short sealands that were being phased out at the time.

ISLANDER

Islander is a 1960's British light utility aircraft regional airline and cargo aircraft designed and originally manufactured by Britten-Norman of the United Kingdom, although designed in 1960s, over 750 are still in service with commercial operators around the world. It was first inducted in Indian navy at Kochi on 18 May 1976 and was part of INAS 550
