PRADHAN MANTRI UJJWALA YOJANA

1. Launch: 1st May 2016 from Ballia district in Uttar Pradesh by PM Narendra Modi.

2. Scheme: Deposit-free LPG connection is given to the eligible household with financial assistance of Rs 1,600 per connection.

3. Target:The scheme was expanded to include 8crore poor families from the earlier target of 5crore families.

4. Budget: Initially Rs. 8000 Crore was allotted for the scheme with an addition of Rs. 4800 Crore subsequently.

5.Objective:The objective of providing clean energy to PradhanMantriUjjwalaYojana (PMUY) beneficiaries and sustained use of LPG relied on three pillars:

Affordability:

  • Deferment of loan recovery through subsidy
  • Refill option with 5 kg cylinder to reduce the upfront cost ofthe refill
  • Free refill scheme option under Pradhan Mantri Garib Kalyan Package

 

Accessibility:

  • Commissioning of more than 6000 new LPG distributors
  • Booking facilities through common service
  • Augmentation of LPG bottling capacity
  • Commissioning of additional bottling plants

Adaptability:

  • Mass campaigns were undertaken to improve awareness about the benefits of scheme and of using LPG
  • SHGs/SDPs/NGOs were engaged to carry out extensive door-to-door campaign in the rural areas which further promoted the adoption of LPG

6. Beneficiaries of PMUY:

 

7. LPG Panchayat:Designed as community meetings, LPG Panchayats were envisioned to discuss safe handling of LPG, and benefits of using LPG over traditional fuels for first time users.

            Five broad themes addressed were:

            1. Health benefit

            2. Economic Cost

            3. Safety

            4. Environment

            5. Empowerment

 

8. Achievements:

  • The 8th crore PMUY connection was handed over by Hon'ble PM on 7th Sept 2019.
  • LPG coverage in India has improved to up to 99.8% as on 1st April 2021, as compared to 62% as on May 2016.
  • Women in the states of UP, West Bengal, Bihar, Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan have been the biggest beneficiaries of the smokeless kitchen initiative.
  • International Energy Agency said it is a “major achievement” in improving the environment and health of women.
  • WHO said that UjjwalaYojana has provided 37 million women, living below the poverty line, with free LPG connections to support them to switch to clean household energy use.
  • Total Connections Released under PradhanMantriUjjwalaYojana (as on 20thOctober 2021) – 8,48,40,912
  • Connections released under Ujjwala 2.0 (as on 20th Oct 2021) – 48,24,282
