Marriage is an important part of family and social life, but couples from different caste backgrounds can sometimes face social opposition and challenges. Government initiatives supporting inter-caste marriages can help promote equality, social harmony and acceptance while providing financial assistance to eligible couples.
Demonstrating how timely government support can help couples overcome social and financial challenges, Shri Ashok Kumar Samantaray, aged 33, and Smt. Sabita Das, aged 30, decided to marry despite belonging to different caste categories. Ashok belongs to the General category, while Sabita belongs to the Kaibarta (SC) community. The couple, from Nirakarpur and Jatani in Khordha District, Odisha, faced strong opposition from their families and local communities because of their different caste backgrounds. Despite the social pressure and difficulties, they remained committed to building their life together. Ashok works as a driver, while Sabita is a homemaker.
Under the Inter-Caste Marriage Incentive, the couple received ₹2.5 lakh in financial assistance. The support brought financial relief to their household and helped them begin their married life with greater stability. The government’s recognition and support also contributed to a gradual change in the attitude of their families and community towards their marriage.

With the financial assistance and increasing family acceptance, Ashok and Sabita are now living a happy and stable life. The couple has been blessed with a baby girl, whose future and education have become their primary aspiration. They have safely saved the government assistance with the intention of using it for their daughter's education and future.
Ashoka and Sabita said ‘The government money has become big blessing for our daughter. It will take care of her education and future, so she can grow up with pride and achieve her dreams.”
The journey of Ashok Kumar Samantaray and Sabita Das highlights how government support for inter-caste marriages can provide meaningful financial assistance while encouraging social acceptance and equality. From facing opposition and social pressure to building a joyful family life, their story reflects resilience, courage and the positive impact of initiatives aimed at promoting social harmony.
