National Institutes of Pharmaceutical Education and Research (NIPERs) are the premier institutes for education and research in the pharmaceutical and medical device sectors. There are currently seven NIPERs. The first NIPER was set up at Mohali (Punjab) as a registered society under the Societies Registration Act, 1860 and given statutory recognition by an act of Parliament, viz., the NIPER Act, 1998. Following amendment of the Act in the year 2007, six more NIPERs were set up at Ahmedabad (Gujarat), Guwahati (Assam), Hajipur (Bihar), Hyderabad (Telangana), Kolkata (West Bengal) and Raebareli (Uttar Pradesh). All seven NIPERs have been given statutory recognition by the NIPER Act, 1998 and declared as the Institutions of National Importance.
