A total of 2488 dumpsites (with more than 1000 tonne of waste) having nearly 25 Cr. Metric Tonnes (MT) of legacy waste have been identified for remediation. So far, 1138 dumpsites have been remediated completely and 1020 sites are under progress. So far 15.51 Cr. MT (62%) of waste has been remediated and 8484.15 Acres (56%) land has been reclaimed. State-wise details of status of remediation of legacy dumpsites remediation  is available at https://sbmurban.org/swachh-bharat-mission-progess.

Dumpsite Remediation Acceleration Programme (DRAP) is an initiative to fast-track remediation of 214 legacy waste dumpsites which account for 80% of the remaining legacy waste and reclaim land for productive urban use, while preventing creation of new dumpsites by September 2026. DRAP covers 200 ULBs for 100% remediation of 214 most difficult dumpsites of each State/UTs.

Ministry of Housing & Urban Affairs (MoHUA) has extended Central Financial Assistance of ₹4,206 crore for projects worth ₹10,308 Cr, benefiting 2,489 ULBs across 29 States/UTs for legacy dumpsite remediation. To support DRAP initiative, the Ministry will provide additional financial assistance to cities based on their micro-plan on case-to-case basis, considering an estimate of ₹550 per tonne for legacy waste remediation as per operational guidelines of SBM-U 2.0. Further, each city has been encouraged to forge one or more partnerships i.e. corporate/PSUs/NGOs as per requirement for support in financing, logistics, technical, utilization & disposal, community engagement & awareness etc.

An IT module has been developed to monitor the progress across these identified sites on a real-time basis, with digital integration of weighbridges where ever possible etc.  Also, regular reviews and field visits are being taken up to assess on-ground progress and ensure timely resolution of challenges.

This information was given by the Minister of State for Housing & Urban Affairs, Shri Tokhan Sahu in a written reply in the Lok Sabha today.
