IIT Bombay today marked a major milestone in its pursuit of global leadership in education, research, and innovation with the unveiling of its Strategy Plan 2026–2030 & Beyond, alongside the launch of India’s first incubator-linked deep tech venture capital fund by the Society for Innovation and Entrepreneurship (SINE), IIT Bombay.

IIT Bombay’s Strategy Plan outlines an ambitious vision to position the Institute among the world’s leading technology universities by 2030. It focuses on strengthening excellence in education, research, innovation, and societal impact, presenting a comprehensive roadmap for long-term institutional advancement.

The Plan is anchored around three core strategic themes.
Learning-Centric Education envisions a transformative shift toward student-driven and experiential learning, expanding global academic pathways, and scaling digital education through online degrees and certificate programmes.

Frontier Research Leadership outlines a focused push in priority areas such as AI/ML, Climate Tech, Healthcare/MedTech, Quantum Technologies, Semiconductors, Advanced Materials, and Space & Defence.
Industry & Society-Relevant Research & Translation emphasizes deeper industry collaboration, stronger startup support, and accelerated translation of research into market-ready solutions.
These themes are enabled by six foundational pillars: strengthening the faculty value proposition, creating world-class infrastructure including a net-zero campus, modernizing administrative processes, ensuring long-term financial sustainability, deepening alumni and corporate engagement, and prioritizing wellness for students, staff, and faculty.

The Strategy Plan was approved by the IIT Bombay Board of Governors and was formally unveiled on 8 December 2025 by Dr. K. Radhakrishnan, Chairperson, Board of Governors. The roadmap was developed through extensive inputs from faculty, students, alumni, industry partners, and staff.
On the same day, SINE, IIT Bombay launched the INR 250-crore Y-Point Venture Capital Fund, India’s first-ever deep tech VC fund managed by an academia-linked incubator. This landmark initiative aims to catalyse early-stage deep tech startups and support their journey from laboratory research to market adoption.
With over two decades of experience nurturing 500+ startups and 1,000+ innovators, SINE has gained deep insights into challenges faced by deep tech founders—long development cycles, capital-intensive technologies, and the need for specialized expertise. The Y-Point Fund addresses these gaps by investing in 25–30 pre-seed and seed-stage startups, with ticket sizes of up to INR 15 crore, supporting ventures emerging from IIT Bombay as well as other premier institutions.
The fund will focus on high-impact sectors including Artificial Intelligence, Advanced Computing, Advanced Manufacturing, Advanced Materials, Nuclear Technology, Space & Defence, Climate & CleanTech, and Life Sciences & Healthcare.
“The fund will serve as a catalyst for building globally competitive ventures by leveraging world-class talent and cutting-edge research,” said Dr. K. Radhakrishnan.
IIT Bombay Director Prof. Shireesh Kedare highlighted SINE’s pivotal role in strengthening the Institute’s innovation ecosystem, while Prof. Milind Atrey underscored the fund’s potential to drive breakthroughs backed by strong intellectual property and societal impact.
CEO Mr. Shaji Varghese shared that fundraising is expected to close within 6–9 months and that preliminary evaluations have begun, with 2–3 investments likely soon. Prof. Abhay Karandikar, Secretary, Department of Science and Technology, congratulated IIT Bombay on the successful launch of both initiatives. Prof. Nishant Sharma, PIC, SINE, delivered the vote of thanks. Together, these two major announcements mark a pivotal moment in strengthening India’s deep tech landscape, fostering world-class research, empowering entrepreneurship, and advancing the nation’s technological leadership.
