Union Minister for Railways, Information & Broadcasting, and Electronics & Information Technology, Shri Ashwini Vaishnaw visited Sairang Railway Station, Mizoram, and interacted with the media about the significance of the Bairabi-Sairang Rail Line ahead of its inauguration.

Shri Vaishnaw elaborated on the extraordinary challenges faced during construction, citing the region’s complex Himalayan geology. The Minister said the young mountains posed difficulties due to organic material and loose sand, necessitating innovative tunneling methods, requiring the team to first solidify the sand into a rock-like formation before proceeding with tunnel and bridge construction.

In the 51-kilometer stretch from Bairabi to Sairang, 45 tunnels and 55 major bridges were constructed, including a bridge taller than the Qutub Minar, symbolizing India’s engineering prowess.

Highlighting the broader development impact, the Minister announced that Hon’ble Prime Minister Narendra Modi will inaugurate the Bairabi-Sairang project tomorrow along with the first train service connecting state capital to National Capital through Rajdhani Express. PM will also inaugurate the three new train services:

  1. A weekly Rajdhani Express from Sairang to New Delhi
  2. A tri-weekly Mizoram Express from Sairang to Kolkata
  3. A daily Aizawl Intercity from Sairang to Guwahati.

The Minister also said that the goods train service will start the day after tomorrow, that is on 14th September. He highlighted that people in the region will benefit from the transportation of cement, steel, and household goods via the new railway line, making these products more affordable. The Minister discussed the possibility of transporting organic, fresh vegetables, beautiful flowers, and exotic fruits like dragon fruit from Mizoram to other parts of the country via the railway network. This model is inspired by the successful apple transportation service from Kashmir to Delhi, aimed at promoting local businesses and enhancing economic opportunities. The Minister stated that improved connectivity will make it easier for tourists to visit the region and has already received widespread appreciation.

Shri Vaishnaw also emphasized the significant increase in budgetary allocation for the Northeast’s railway development, which rose from approx. ₹2,000 crore annually before 2014 to approx. ₹10,000 crore now. He noted that this reflects the Prime Minister’s strong commitment to improving infrastructure and connectivity in the region.

Congratulating the entire project team, Shri Vaishnaw mentioned Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, Railway Board Shri Satish Kumar; General Manager of North East Frontier Railway Shri Chetan Kumar Shrivastava, and General Manager (Construction) Shri Arun Kumar Choudhary for their meticulous efforts. Lok Sabha MP Shri Richard Vanlalhmangaiha, and Rajya Sabha MP Shri K. Vanlalvena were also present on the occasion.
