The Government of India has established the National Mission on Monuments and Antiquities (NMMA) in 2007 to prepare two national registers on monuments and antiquities across the country. So far, NMMA has documented and published data for 11,406 Built Heritage & Sites and 12,41,349 Antiquities. State-wise data is attached in (Annexure-I). The above data is uploaded on the NMMA website: http://nmma.nic.in.
Digital data is publicly accessible on the NMMA website http://nmma.nic.in. At present, data is in English for universal access.
ASI is using some of scientific instruments/ techniques like portable XRF (X-ray Fluorescence), RAMAN Spectroscopy, FTIR Spectroscopy (Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy), Polarised Microscope, IR Camera (Infrared Camera), UV Spectrophotometer (Ultraviolet-visible Spectrophotometer), TGA (Thermogravimetric Analysis) etc. for preservation works of monuments, heritage sites, antiquities in the country.
NMMA is conducting workshops in various regions to raise awareness and provide training programs to universities, colleges, NGOs, and other interested organizations, in coordination with Circle Offices. State-Level Implementation Committee (SLIC) have also been set up to speed up the documentation work.
This information was given by Union Minister for Culture and Tourism Shri Gajendra Singh Shekhawat in a written reply in Rajya Sabha today.
