Workshop on ‘Capacity Building Workshop on Monitoring Frameworks of Sustainable Development Goals, Compilation of Environment Accounts, and Gender Statistics’ during 23-24th January, 2025, Bhopal

In continuation, the Day 2 of the‘Capacity Building Workshop on Monitoring Frameworks of Sustainable Development Goals, Compilation of Environment Accounts, and Gender Statistics’offered crucial insights into the other pillars of sustainability – environment and gender.
The session on environmental frameworks highlighted India's advancements in environmental economic accounting, emphasizing the essential role of state involvement in driving progress in this area. UNDP underscored the importance of harmonizing people, planet, and profits, advocating for management systems that are both profitable and sustainable. Best practices from Telangana, Himachal Pradesh, and Uttarakhand were shared, including the innovative grid-based design of the National Forest Inventory, as well as the Sustainable Environment Performance Index and Gross Environment Product. The session encouraged shared learning to foster the balance between economic growth and ecological sustainability.
The session on Gender Statistics provided valuable insights into the significance of gender-disaggregated data and gender statistics for achieving equality and equity. Insights from NFHS-5 detailed advancements in gender statistics over five rounds, including expanded dimensions, improved tools, and broader sample sizes, which have revealed significant progress in areas like maternal health and contraceptive use. The session from UN Women highlighted the importance of gender sensitive SDG monitoring, and introduced indices like the Women Empowerment Index (WEI) and Global Gender Parity Index (GGPI) as tools for targeted interventions. States like Kerala, Nagaland, and Tamil Nadu shared their progresses in gender statistics, including innovative practices like Kerala's Gender Data Hub and Nagaland's Gender Statistics Database. The session underscored collaborative efforts and technical support to enhance gender statistics across India.
Shri N K Santoshi, Director General (Central Statistics), MoSPI emphasized upon peer-learning towards advancement in environmental accounting. The closing session was dedicated to summarizing the key findings from the workshop, emphasizing the action points and way forward.
The Two-day Workshop was a huge success and it truly facilitated an in-depth exchange of ideas, best practices, and strategies for advancing aspects of environmental data, gender and SDGs monitoring through enhanced data collection, policy integration, and inclusive governance. One of the key takeaways of the workshop is the importance of multi-stakeholder partnerships and effective collaboration between the various stakeholders.
The success of this workshop was greatly enhanced by the unwavering support and active collaboration of the Government of Madhya Pradesh, whose contributions ranged from logistical arrangements to resource mobilization. The proactive approach and dedication of stakeholders to fostering knowledge-sharing and capacity-building set a commendable example. Additionally, the technical support provided by UNDP played an instrumental role in ensuring the workshop's effectiveness and impact.The collaborative efforts taken by the Ministry are a testament to India’s commitment to building a sustainable, equitable, and inclusive future for all its citizens. The Ministry is looking forward to organizing more such workshops.
