LOK SABHA SPEAKER HOLDS BILATERAL MEETING WITH THE VISITING PARLIAMENTARY DELEGATION FROM ARMENIA

Lok Sabha Speaker Shri Om Birla today held bilateral meeting with H.E. Mr. Alen Simonyan, President of the National Assembly of the Republic of Armenia in the Parliament House Complex. Both the sides held discussions on various issues of mutual interest including trade and investment. Welcoming the Armenian delegation, which is on a five day visit to India, Shri Birla fondly recalled his earlier meeting with H.E. Simonyan during the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) Assembly in Geneva earlier this year.

Shri Birla noted that in recent years, political and parliamentary dialogue and cooperation between the two countries have increased, opening up new avenues of partnership in various sectors. He informed the visiting Armenian Parliamentary delegation that due to a stable government under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, India is leaping forward at highest economic growth rate in the world. He also highlighted the efforts towards Ease of Doing Business and world-class infrastructure in India which has generated huge interest across the world in India.

Emphasizing the importance of continued dialogue and cooperation between the two countries on multilateral fora, he said that regular discussions on regional and global issues between the two nations and two Parliaments would further strengthen the bilateral ties. Underlining deep historical and cultural ties between India and Armenia, he hoped that with the growing bilateral cooperation will strengthen people-to-people connection.

Highlighting India as ‘Mother of Democracy’, he emphasized that the cooperation between Parliaments of India and Armenia should be further strengthened to reinforce the core principles of democracy. Shri Birla informed the delegation that this year marks the 75th anniversary of the adoption of the Constitution of India which is an important milestone in the nation’s journey. To commemorate this historic occasion, a two-day special discussion on Constitution of India were held in both the houses of the Parliament of India, he added.

Mentioning that India has always championed the cause of gender equality, Shri Birla informed the delegation that the first legislation passed in the New Parliament Building was the "Nari Shakti Vandan Act," which strengthens the commitment to women-led development in the country. He observed that in recent years, the Parliament of India has made extensive use of digital technologies, simplifying processes and enhancing transparency. He said that the "Digital Parliament" project was one such initiative which has led to increased participation by citizens in India's democratic processes.
