Union Minister of Heavy Industries & Steel, Shri H.D. Kumaraswamy, attended the 36th National Conference on ‘Green Revolution in Steel - Sustainable Innovations’ at Goregaon, Mumbai. The two-day event which concluded today -19th September 2024 was organised by the All India Induction Furnace Association (AIIFA) Sustainable Steel Manufacturers Association at the Bombay Exhibition Centre in Goregaon, Mumbai.

Addressing the gathering, Shri H.D. Kumaraswamy highlighted the pivotal role the steel industry plays in India's economic growth, calling it the backbone of the nation’s infrastructure, construction, and manufacturing sectors. He emphasized that the industry’s contributions to job creation and regional development are crucial, making it a key driver of India’s prosperity.
The Minister emphasized the ambitious goal of reaching 300 million tonnes of steel capacity by 2030 while committing to a net-zero target by 2070. He underscored the importance of adopting energy-efficient technologies and innovative solutions, such as green hydrogen and carbon capture, to achieve a low-carbon economy.

The Minister also underscored the importance of sustainable innovations in the sector. He reiterated that the National Steel Policy serves as the foundation for this green transformation, focusing on the adoption of green technologies and reducing carbon footprints throughout the industry. The Minister called for robust collaboration between public and private sectors, citing initiatives like the Green Steel Initiative as vital for environmental impact and economic growth. He also urged increased investment in research and development to foster innovative solutions for sustainable steel production.
Addressing concerns of secondary producers regarding raw materials and operational challenges, the Minister reassured stakeholders of the government’s commitment to support industry progress and competitiveness.

He reiterated that the steel sector must collectively embrace the green revolution, fostering sustainable practices for a brighter future. "Your engagement and commitment are essential for driving the adoption of green technologies and sustainable practices across the steel sector," he added. He concluded by expressing gratitude to all participants and industry leaders for their commitment to sustainability, reinforcing that the journey toward a greener steel industry is a shared responsibility.

The event was also attended by key industry leaders, including Shri Yogesh Madhani, President AIIFA, Shri Balasubramanian Prabhakaran, MD Llyods Metals, Shri Shaliesh Bhandari, and Shri Kamal Agarwal, among others.

The conference aims to provide a platform for key stakeholders to collaborate on strategies for reducing carbon emissions and addressing climate change challenges within the steel industry. The conference is co-located with Steelex 2024, featuring over 200 exhibitors and attracting 1,200 delegates, along with 15,000 trade visitors.
