Union Minister of State for Steel, Shri Bhupathi Raju Srinivasa Varma Inaugurates AIIFA National Conference on Sustainable Innovation in Steel in Mumbai

Mumbai, 18th September 2024

Union Minister of State for Steel, Shri Bhupathi Raju Srinivasa Varma, inaugurated the two-day conference (18th to 19th September) themed “Green Revolution in Steel – Sustainable Innovation” today. The event organised by the All India Induction Furnace Association (AIIFA) Sustainable Steel Manufacturers Association is taking place at the Bombay Exhibition Centre in Goregaon, Mumbai, and will conclude tomorrow. Union Minister of Steel and Heavy Industries, Shri H D Kumaraswamy will attend tomorrow's concluding session.

The conference aims to provide a platform for key stakeholders to collaborate on strategies for reducing carbon emissions and addressing climate change challenges within the steel industry.

In his inaugural address, Shri Bhupathi Raju Srinivasa Varma underscored the significance of sustainable practices and innovation in the steel sector. “This conference represents our shared commitment to a greener and more resilient future,” the Minister stated, calling on industry leaders to embrace eco-friendly practices and advanced technologies to reduce the sector's environmental impact.

Highlighting the importance of collaboration, the Minister said that this conference is a platform that fosters dialogue among industry experts and stakeholders. “Together, we can drive meaningful change and position India as a global leader in sustainable steel manufacturing,” Shri Srinivasa Varma affirmed.

As the steel industry confronts significant environmental challenges, the Minister urged attendees to adopt innovative solutions. He also encouraged the industry stakeholders for prioritizing corporate social responsibility and collaboration with government and research institutions to lead the green revolution in steel.

The Minister also released a 2024 Souvenir and Handbook on the Indian Steel Sector. He also felicitated ten distinguished associations of the steel industry during the inaugural session.

Secretary, Ministry of Steel,  Sandeep Poundrik and Joint Secretary, Ministry of Steel, Abhijit Narendra spoke about the significance of bringing sustainable innovations in the sector.

President of AIIFA, Yogesh Mandhani, delivered the welcome address. A presentation on STEELEX was made during the event by Govind Goyal, Kalika Steels and Yashraj Peety, SRJ Steels. Secretary General, AIIFA Sustainable Steel Manufacturers Association, Kamal Aggarwal, Managing Director of Lloyds Metals and Energy Limited, Balasubramanian Prabhakaran, and Chairman of Electrotherm (I) Ltd., Shailesh Bhandari also spoke during the event.

The session concluded with a vote of thanks from Shri Gopal Gupta of Lexcon Steels Limited.

The conference is co-located with Steelex 2024, featuring over 200 exhibitors and attracting 1,200 delegates, along with 15,000 trade visitors.
