Status on the Ayush research centres in the country

Central Council for Research in Homoeopathy (CCRH) is an apex research organization under Ministry of Ayush, which undertakes coordinates, develops, disseminates and promotes scientific research in Homoeopathy through its network of 27 Research Institutes/units and 07 Homoeopathic treatment centres and is carrying out intramural research including collaboration with institutes of excellence, promoting Homoeopathy and offering healthcare services through the OPDs/IPDs of the above institutes/units and treatment centres. CCRH has upgraded its institutes in terms of infrastructure, laboratory facilities and upgraded Central Research Institute, Kottayam into National Homoeopathy Research Institute in Mental Health (NHRIMH), Kottayam. CCRH is also participating in National/ State level Arogya Melas/ Health camps/ exhibition to promote and popularize Homoeopathy among general masses. As part of IEC program, CCRH has developed information and education material which are distributed free of cost to the general public through Exhibitions / Health Melas / Seminars/ celebration of World Homoeopathy Day/ social media, such as facebook pages, twitter account, etc. Further, Council has undertaken following Public Health Initiative programmes: Homoeopathy for Healthy teething; Swasthya Rakshan Programme; Schedule Caste Component plan (SC Component plan) Health camps; Participating in poshan maha abhiyan through its centres; Participating in the activities related to Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav.

Central Council for Research in Ayurvedic Sciences (CCRAS) and Central Council for Research in Homoeopathy (CCRH) are apex research organizations under the aegis of Ministry of Ayush for Ayurveda and Homoeopathy systems of Medicine, respectively. CCRAS has thirty Research Institutes/centres and CCRH has twenty seven Research Institutes/units across the country. During the last three years, CCRH has established one new Clinical Research Unit at Goa in the year 2023, however, CCRAS has not established any new Research Centre during last three years. Funds utilized/ allocated to the Clinical Research Unit (H) at Goa during the year 2022-23 is Rs. 7.32 Lakhs and during the year 2023- 24 is Rs. 85.29 Lakhs.

The Council in collaboration with the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare integrated Homoeopathy under National Programme for Prevention and Control of Cancer, Diabetes, Cardiovascular Diseases & Stroke (NPCDCS). The Objectives of Programme were Health promotion of masses through behaviour change, Disease prevention through early diagnosis of Non-Communicable Diseases (NCDs), Reduction in NCD burden and their risk factors, Early management of NCDs through Homoeopathic treatment alone or as add on to standard care.

National Institute of Homoeopathy (NIH), Kolkata is an Autonomous Organisation under the Ministry of Ayush to foster excellence in Homoeopathic Medical Education and Research, to educate and train undergraduate, post graduate students and research scholars of Homoeopathy in accordance with highest professional standards and ethical values. The Institute presently conducts the degree course in Homoeopathy viz. Bachelor of Homoeopathic Medicine and Surgery (B.H.M.S.) and Post - Graduate course i.e. Doctor of Medicine in Homoeopathy [M.D.(Hom.)] in six speciality.

A satellite Institute of the National Institute of Homoeopathy, Kolkata, was inaugurated by the  Prime Minister of India on 11th December 2022 at Narela, Delhi with the vision of expansion of infrastructure and human resources, promotion of research in the traditional medical systems like Ayush and their active engagement in the healthcare system, and providing affordable healthcare to every citizen and every region of the country.

National Commission for Homoeopathy (NCH) - Ministry of Ayush by its notification dated 5th July, 2021 repealed the Homoeopathy Central Council Act, 1973 (59 of 1973) and constituted a Commission namely National Commission for Homoeopathy under the provision of National Commission for Homoeopathy Act, 2020 to exercise the powers conferred upon, and to perform the functions assigned to it. NCH, a statutory body under the Ministry of Ayush, has notified a regulation, namely, the National Commission for Homoeopathy (Medical Research in Homoeopathy) Regulation, 2023 specifying the guidelines for undertaking research in Homoeopathy.

Further, NCH encourages Homoeopathy Medical professionals to adopt latest medical research in their work and contribute to research in Homoeopathy. The concepts of Research Methodology, Degree Course - Bachelor of Homoeopathic Medicine and Surgery (B.H.M.S.), provision of Methodology for supplementing modern advancement, research and technology in Homoeopathy (SMART-Hom) have been appropriately incorporated in the regulation namely, the National Commission for Homoeopathy (Homoeopathy Graduate Degree Course- Bachelor of Homoeopathic Medicine and Surgery (B.H.M.S.)Regulations 2020.

NCH has also conducted research methodology training for post graduate students and teachers in association with Central Council for Research in Homoeopathy.

Pharmacopoeia Commission for Indian Medicine & Homoeopathy (PCIM&H) is a subordinate office under Ministry of Ayush, Government of India for Development of Pharmacopoeias and Formularies as well as acting as Central Drug Testing cum Appellate Laboratory for Indian systems of Medicine & Homoeopathy. Pharmacopoeia standards for Homoeopathic drugs are established through publication of Homoeopathic Pharmacopoeia of India (HPI) by PCIM&H on behalf of Ministry of Ayush.
