As per information furnished by Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB), out of total 67,988 number of industries requiring Effluent Treatment Plants (ETPs), 66,053 industries are operating with functional ETPs, and 1,935 industries were found operating without ETPs for which action are being taken by the respective authorities. Presently, there are total 201 CETPs are operating in 20 States/UTs, across the country, with design capacity of 1917 MLD and operational capacity of 1137 MLD. CPCB is also carrying out assessment of sewage generation and its treatment system available in the country from time to time with the help of SPCBs/PCCs and Local Bodies.

Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (MoHUA), through its National Missions i.e., Atal Mission for Rejuvenation and Urban Transformation (AMRUT) & AMRUT 2.0 is supporting the efforts of State Governments for management of wastewater.

Atal Mission for Rejuvenation and Urban Transformation (AMRUT) scheme was launched in June 2015 in 500 cities across the country to provide basic infrastructure of water supply, sewerage & septage management, storm water drainage, non-motorized urban transport, and green space & parks. Sewerage and Septage Management sector is one of the Mission components under AMRUT. So far, 865 projects worth ₹ 34,303 crore have been grounded including 637 completed project worth ₹ 16,257 crore. Further, STPs Capacity of 3,685 MLD have been created, another 2,546 MLD capacity STP creation is in progress.

Under AMRUT 2.0, launched on 1st October 2021 covering all the statutory towns of the country to ensure universal coverage of water supply & make cities ‘water secure’, targets to ensure universal coverage of sewerage & septage management in 500 AMRUT cities. So far, 4,814 MLD STP Capacity have been proposed through approved projects.

CPCB has prepared Action Plan and directed the SPCBs/PCCs to ensure that industries requiring Effluent Treatment Plants (ETPs) are allowed to operate only if they have functional ETPs. For this purpose, (i) SPCBs/PCCs shall close-down such industries with immediate effect, which are operating without functional ETPs, and (ii) Electricity and water supply of such defaulting industries shall be disconnected, if required. CPCB has communicated to Principal Secretaries of Urban Development Department for formulation of comprehensive action plans for sewage management in their respective States/UTs.
