Posted On: 23 NOV 2023 7:27PM by PIB Delhi

The Chief Commissioner for Persons with Disabilities, Shri Rajesh Aggarwal, has initiated action following a news item in The Times of India on 21.11.2023, highlighting the lack of disability-friendly infrastructure at JNU Campus. Issues include inaccessible entrances and the absence of ramps and elevators, violating UGC accessibility norms, leading to student dropouts.

In response, Deputy Chief Commissioner, Shri P. P. Ambashta, issued a notice to the JNU Registrar citing relevant provisions of the Rights of Persons with Disability Act, 2016. Sections 16, 17, 44, 45, and 46, along with Rule 15 of the Rights of Persons with Disability Rules, 2017, were emphasized, incorporating the Harmonized Guidelines and Standards for Universal Accessibility in India – 2021. The Registrar is required to investigate and respond within 30 days.

This proactive stance aligns with the commitment to safeguard the rights of persons with disabilities, ensuring inclusive environments in educational institutions as mandated by the law.
