Born on 12 October 1935 in Chakur village of Latur district in Maharashtra, Shri Shivraj V. Patil dedicated his life to public service. He was first elected to the Seventh Lok Sabha in 1980 from the Latur parliamentary constituency, representing it across multiple consecutive Lok Sabha terms.

Shri Patil had the rare distinction of being unanimously elected as the Speaker of the Tenth Lok Sabha, an office he held from 10 July 1991 to 22 May 1996. He also played a pivotal role in the constitution of 17 Departmentally-related Standing Committees on 31 March 1993, a landmark initiative that strengthened Parliament’s role in ensuring greater accountability of the Executive. His initiatives further included the introduction of the MPLADS, computerisation of information services for Members, and live telecast of parliamentary proceedings.

Shri Patil passed away on 12 December 2025.
