For Dr. Moniya, completing a Ph.D. meant overcoming financial constraints and becoming the first person in her family to earn a doctoral degree. Support under the National Fellowship for Scheduled Caste Students (NFSC) helped her sustain her research and achieve this milestone.

Dr. Moniya, a 29-year-old scholar from Kurukshetra, Haryana, successfully completed her Ph.D. with assistance under the NFSC Scheme. Her achievement reflects her perseverance through financial difficulties and the role of fellowship support in enabling her to continue doctoral research.

With an aspiration to become a scientist and undertake novel research in nano-biotechnology, Dr. Moniya was determined to pursue higher education. However, her family lacked sufficient financial resources to support her doctoral studies. Research expenses placed considerable pressure on her and caused concern within her family.

According to Dr. Moniya, limited support from her research supervisor added to these difficulties. She faced expenses for sample testing, stationery, laboratory equipment repairs and participation in conferences. She also reported experiencing caste discrimination and delays during her doctoral journey, making an already demanding period more difficult.

Despite these challenges, she continued working towards completing her Ph.D. Her ambition to undertake scientific research remained an important motivation, while her experiences during higher education also encouraged her to consider a future career in administration.

NFSC assistance began in March 2022. Dr. Moniya received more than Rs. 10 lakh through fellowship payments, House Rent Allowance (HRA) and contingency assistance. This support helped her meet expenses associated with chemicals, equipment, sample testing, conference fees, thesis printing and laboratory instrument repairs.

 

 

The assistance helped address the financial barriers affecting her doctoral work. By providing resources for research and academic participation, the fellowship enabled her to continue her studies and work towards completing her thesis.

 

With fellowship support, Dr. Moniya completed her Ph.D. and became the first doctoral degree holder in her family. Earning the title “Dr.” marked a significant personal achievement and a milestone for a family that had worried about the financial demands of her higher education.

Dr. Moniya is currently preparing for UPSC examinations, scientist recruitment examinations and assistant professor examinations. Alongside her interest in scientific research, she wishes to pursue a career in administration as she works towards her next professional opportunity.
