Access to affordable and quality cancer treatment remains a significant challenge for patients living in rural and semi-urban areas. Establishing specialised oncology facilities requires substantial investment in advanced medical equipment and infrastructure, making quality cancer care inaccessible for many underprivileged communities. Demonstrating how institutional financial support can strengthen healthcare entrepreneurship, Harshamitra Oncology Pvt. Ltd., based in Trichy, Tamil Nadu, has emerged as a trusted provider of affordable cancer treatment through radiation therapy. The company's journey reflects the transformative impact of the Venture Capital Fund for Scheduled Castes (VCF-SC) under the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment.

Harshamitra Oncology Pvt. Ltd., owned by Dr Govindaraj was established with the objective of providing quality cancer treatment through radiation therapy at an affordable cost. By focusing on underserved and rural populations, the enterprise has been playing a vital role in improving access to specialised healthcare services while supporting the broader objective of inclusive healthcare delivery.

Affordable Cancer Treatment Through Radiation Therapy

Recognising the project's social and healthcare impact, the Venture Capital Fund for Scheduled Castes extended financial assistance of 4.80 crore in 2015 through venture capital assistance comprising equity and optionally convertible debentures. The financial support enabled the enterprise to expand its cancer treatment facility and strengthen its operational capabilities to serve a larger population.

The financial assistance enabled the company to expand its existing business operations, strengthen community engagement and enhance the delivery of affordable, quality cancer care services. The project has also generated direct and indirect employment opportunities for local people while significantly improving access to specialised oncology services for rural communities.

Radiation Therapy & Affordable Cancer Care Facility

The impact of the intervention has been significant. Today, Harshamitra Oncology Pvt. Ltd. continues to provide affordable cancer treatment to patients across the region while strengthening community healthcare infrastructure. The expansion of the facility has enhanced access to specialised radiation therapy, generated employment opportunities and contributed to better healthcare outcomes for underserved populations.

Reflecting on the journey, Dr. Govindaraj said:

"The support received under the scheme not only strengthened the business but also helped us continue contributing to social welfare and healthcare services in the region."

The success of Harshamitra Oncology Pvt. Ltd. demonstrates how targeted financial support under the Venture Capital Fund for Scheduled Castes (VCF-SC) is enabling entrepreneurs to build sustainable healthcare enterprises that improve access to quality medical services, generate employment and strengthen healthcare infrastructure in underserved regions. By fostering entrepreneurship and supporting socially impactful businesses, the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment continues to empower entrepreneurs, improve lives and build sustainable futures across the country.
