Pradhan Mantri Schools for Rising India (PM SHRI) is a centrally sponsored scheme which aims to strengthen more than 14,500 schools across the country. As of now, a total of 13,092 schools have been selected as PM SHRI schools across States/UTs along with KVS/NVS/NCERT. These PM SHRI schools showcase all the initiatives of National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, be exemplar schools, and offer benchmarking leadership to other schools in the neighbourhood. They provide leadership in their respective regions in providing high-quality education in an equitable, inclusive and joyful school environment that takes care of the diverse background, multilingual needs, and different academic abilities of children and makes them active participants in their own learning process as per the vision of NEP 2020.

The fund allocation and release in the PM SHRI scheme started from FY 2023-24. The details of funds allocated and released under the PM SHRI scheme during FY 2023- 24, FY 2024-25, FY 2025-26 and FY 2026-27,  State/UT/KVS/NVS/NCERT-wise are attached as Annexure.

Under the PM SHRI scheme, States/UTs sign a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Centre, laying down the commitments for supporting the schools for achieving specified quality assurance as PM SHRI schools. Thereafter, the selection of PM SHRI schools is done through the Challenge Mode, wherein schools compete for support to become exemplar schools.

In PM SHRI schools, either the CBSE or State/UT Syllabus, according to their affiliation with CBSE or State Boards of Examination, is followed.

As envisaged in Para 1.1 of PM SHRI school framework on school transformation, curriculum in PM SHRI schools shall follow the NCF/SCF developed in accordance with new curricular and pedagogical structure viz. the 5+3+3+4, which will be reflected in NCF-FS and NCF-SE. The states have the flexibility of contextualizing the curriculum as per the state-specific needs, adhering to the core fundamental principles and constitutional values.

The State of Kerala has signed the MoU on 23rd October 2025, which was to be followed by transparent challenge Mode for the selection of PM SHRI schools.

PM SHRI Scheme aims to showcase all the components of the National Education Policy 2020 and focuses not only on cognitive development but also on creating holistic and well-rounded individuals equipped with key 21st century skills. The scheme focuses on creating an equitable, inclusive, and joyful learning environment that caters to diverse backgrounds, multilingual needs, and varied academic abilities. These schools are designed to engage students actively in their learning process, ensuring that every child feels welcomed, cared for, and supported in a safe and stimulating environment. Therefore, the States that do not sign the MoU or withdraw from the scheme stand to miss out on these benefits of PM SHRI scheme.
