The Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEF&CC), Government of India envisages to celebrate the World Environment Day 2023 with a thrust on the Mission LiFE. The concept of LiFE, introduced by the Hon'ble Prime Minister of India, aims to promote sustainable living by encouraging individuals to make changes in their lifestyles and emphasizes responsible and conscious use of resources to safeguard and conserve the environment.

To generate widespread awareness and advocacy for LiFE across India, a month-long mass mobilization campaign on Mission LiFE is currently underway.  Following the “whole of government” and “whole of society” approach, the Ministry has mobilized Central Ministries/ Departments, State/ UT Governments/ Administrations, Institutions, and private organizations to spread the message of Mission LiFE. The ongoing mass mobilization campaign aims to amplify pan-India advocacy and awareness about LiFE, leading up to celebration on World Environment Day on 5th June 2023.

1. GB Pant National Institute of Himalayan Environment

Centre for Land and Water Resource Management (CLWRM) of the G.B. Pant National Institute of Himalayan Environment (NIHE) conducted an awareness and action campaign under mission LiFE on 31st May 2023.  40 participants including faculties, researchers, and support staff of CLWRM participated in the event. All the participants took the LiFE pledge to adopt environmentally friendly habits.

North-East Regional Centre (NERC) the G.B. Pant National Institute of Himalayan Environment (NIHE) organized an Awareness Programme at Guardian Angel Public School, Papum Pare, Itanagar, under the ‘Adopt healthy lifestyle’ and ‘Save water'   themes of Mission Life .

Sikkim Regional Centre (SRC) of G.B. Pant National Institute of Himalayan Environment (NIHE) conducted awareness and action events with the villagers of Railgaon, Pangthang including homestay owners. The participants were made aware on ‘Solid Waste Management’ and ‘Homestay Steering’ under the mission LiFE theme ‘Reduce Waste’ and ‘Adopt Healthy Lifestyles’. Additionally, a plantation drive of a threatened species, Rhododendron maddenii was conducted for its conservation. A total of 17 participants took the LiFE pledge to adopt environment-friendly habits.

Centre for Biodiversity Conservation and Management (CBCM) of G.B. Pant National Institute of Himalayan Environment (NIHE) conducted an awareness campaign at Mahatgawn village of Almora district linking "Reduce Waste" and "Healthy lifestyle" themes of mission LiFE. A total of 15 kg of plastic waste was collected and disposed off in the waste collection point of the block (Hawalbag). Further, multipurpose trees C. tamala, Q. glauca, Q. leucotrichophora, Z. armatum were planted in the barren land to promote "Biodiversity and Health Lifestyle". A total of 40 participants, participated in the program and took the "LiFE Pledge" to adopt environment-friendly lifestyle.

Himachal Regional Centre (HRC) of G.B. Pant National Institute of Himalayan Environment (NIHE) organized an awareness cum cleanliness drive to reduce waste in waterbodies & public places under the ‘Reduce Waste’ theme of mission LiFE .

Centre for Environmental Assessment & Climate Change (CEA&CC) of G.B. Pant National Institute of Himalayan Environment (NIHE)-Almora organized an awarenss and action drive.

Centre For Socio-Economic Development (CSED) of NIHE organized an awareness and action cum training program at Rural Technology Centre of Institute. The program was attended by 35 Female stakeholders from NIESBD, Centre Almora, and by 15 faculties, research scholars and supporting staff of CSED, NIHE. During the program, the awareness on different themes of the Mission such as Reduce Waste through the production of value-added products of waste newspaper, papers and pine. Further, the hands-on training for mushroom cultivation under Adopting Sustainable Food Systems theme and the Production of biofuel (Biobriquetts) under the Save Energy theme of Mission LiFE was imparted to the participants. All the participants took the LiFE pledge to adopt environmentally friendly habits towards sustaining the natural resources in the Indian Himalayan region (IHR).

Garhwal Regional Centre (GRC) of the National Institute of Himalayan Environment (NIHE) conducted an awareness and action campaign cum cleanliness drive in the Parag dairy, Srinagar District of Uttarakhand under the ‘Reduce Waste’ theme of mission LiFE. A total of 35 kg of plastic waste has been collected and disposed off in the waste collection point of Nagar Nigam.

Centre for Environmental Assessment & Climate Change (CEA&CC) of G.B. Pant National Institute of Himalayan Environment (NIHE) has organized a consultative cum brainstorming workshop on ‘Water management’ under “Mission Lifestyle for Environment (LiFE)” on 31st May 2023 near Raini village, Joshimath, Chamoli, Uttarakhand, to foster the "Adopting Healthy & Sustainable Lifestyles". A total of 25 participants participated in the program. All the participants took the LiFE pledge to sustain the natural resources in the Indian Himalayan region (IHR) and to contribute to environmental conservation and water management in the region.

The Ladakh Regional Centre (LRC) of the G.B. Pant National Institute of Himalayan Environment (NIHE) organized two events under mission LiFE on 31 May 2023.

 

2. National Centre for Sustainable Coastal Management

Under the mass mobilisation of Mission LiFE, NCSCM organised an awareness campaign on sustainable food systems and healthy lifestyles among the traditional fishing community producing massmeen in Agatti Island, one of the inhabited islands in the Union Territory of Lakshadweep. The island is situated approximately 459 km off the coast of Kerala and covers an area of about 3.84 sq. km. with a population of around 7,000. It is known as the gateway to Lakshadweep and serves as an important entry point for tourists. The concept of a sustainable blue economy (BE) is particularly relevant to small islands, given their close relationship with the ocean and dependence on marine resources.

 

3. Zoological Survey of India

The Zoological Survey of India team recently visited Illish Truly Bong, a restaurant in Park Street, Kolkata,which has taken up initiatives under Mission LiFE. The Director of the Restaurant, Ms Lopamundra, spoke to the team and shared how they are promoting Mission LiFE in many ways.

For Mass Mobilisation of Mission LiFE Zoological Survey of India, Kolkata conducted awareness programs at famous and iconic destinations of Kolkata. The team visited Victoria Memorial and spoke to people about adopting LiFE. The team organised awareness drives at Princep Ghat,Birla Planetarium,Maidan, Eden Gardens,St Paul's Cathedral and Babu Ghat.Through this drive the ZSI team reached out to a total of 1000 people.

 

4. Botanical Survey of India

BSI WRC Pune officials visited Chakkan Village Pune and sensitized the local people, Farmers, passengers  and pilgrims of Alandi Temple , Pune about Mission LIFE . Sensitised More than 1500 people about LiFE Mission List of actions

5. Environmental Information, Awareness, Capacity Building and Livelihood Programme (EIACP):

The Environmental Information, Awareness, Capacity Building and Livelihood Programme (EIACP) is a Central Sector sub-scheme aligned with the Mission LiFE initiative. The program is dedicated to raising awareness, building capacity, and promoting sustainable actions among individuals and communities across India. By focusing on education and empowerment, the EIACP aims to drive positive change and foster a sustainable future for all.

On Wednesday, 31st May, 2023, the EIACP Programme Centres conducted a series of vibrant activities as part of a mass mobilization campaign leading up to the World Environment Day 2023 celebrations. Notable events included interactive workshops and webinars centered around topics such as "Waste To Wealth," "Promotion of Millets and Similar Products for a Healthy Life," "Ban on Single-Use Plastics," and "Water: Mission LiFE for Environment." Additionally, a mass awareness program covered vital topics such as Energy Efficiency, Saving Wetlands, and Solutions to Plastic Pollution.

The enthusiastic response to these activities was remarkable, with over 7,000 participants actively engaging from different parts of India. The diverse range of attendees included school children, university students, individuals, the scientific community, and various institutions.

 

6. Environment Education Programme (EEP)

Various Eco-clubs under Environment Education Programme (EEP) organized 925 events for promotion of Mission LiFE with participation of more than 30,000 children on May 31, 2023. More than 29,000 LiFE pledges also were taken during the day’s events.

Open Exhibition on 'Waste to Wealth' was organized by Mizoram Pollution Control Board, Implementing Agency for Mizoram at Chanmari YMA Hall, Aizawl.

More than 100 Eco-club schools of Sikkim took active part in Mission LiFE propagation and awareness engaging 5000+ students. Activities include pledge ceremony, creation of LiFE gardens, declaring plastic free schools, dustbin free zones, quizzes, flower shows etc.
