24.82 crore uplifted from poverty with gains in health, education & standard of living
During the past 9 years, the multidimensional poverty in India has declined from 29.17% in 2013-14 to 11.28% in 2022-23 with about 24.82 crore people escaping poverty.
The multidimensional poverty at an individual level is assessed by a multidimensional poverty index (MPI). If a person is deprived in a third or more of twelve (weighted) indicators, the National MPI identifies them as ‘MPI poor’. Multidimensional poverty for India for the years 2005-06, 2015-16, and 2019-21, was estimated by Niti Aayog using data from the corresponding National Family Health Survey (NFHS) rounds (3 to 5).
The Niti Aayog projects that India is all set to reach single-digit poverty levels during 2024. The rate of decline in multi-dimensional poverty accelerated significantly during the period 2013-2014 to 2022-2023. This is made possible by a large number of initiatives/ schemes of the Government targeted at improving specific deprivation aspects.
THE GOVERNMENT’S BIG NINE
The Government of India has taken an integrated approach to make significant strides in enhancing the quality for millions of its citizens on each indicator, with a focus on the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) 1.2 target of halving poverty in all its dimensions by 2030.
Nine flagship schemes in particular form the bedrock of Government initiatives to reduce MPI. These schemes have collectively improved healthcare, living conditions, and financial inclusion.
