National Overseas Scholarship: Yukti’s (Name Changed) Journey from Barriers to Global Opportunities

Posted On: 26 OCT 2026 3:07PM by PIB Delhi

For many aspiring students, access to quality higher education is a stepping stone towards a brighter future. However, for students from disadvantaged backgrounds, social discrimination and financial constraints can create significant barriers to academic and professional advancement. The journey of Ms. Yukti, a 26-year-old postgraduate belonging to the Scheduled Caste (SC) community, highlights how targeted government support can help transform educational aspirations into opportunities.

From an early age, Yukti faced caste-based discrimination and social exclusion. Her family also experienced persistent financial difficulties, as her father was the sole earning member and worked in a low-paying job. Despite his education, occupational barriers and social bias limited his career progression, leaving the family with limited resources. Yukti’s parents nevertheless prioritised her education and encouraged her to pursue her ambitions. With no financial safety net, she relied on government schools and public scholarships to continue her studies.

Yukti aspired to pursue advanced higher education and build a meaningful career connected with research and academic development. However, the substantial cost of postgraduate education abroad appeared to be a major obstacle. A significant turning point came when she received support under the National Overseas Scholarship (NOS) Scheme of the Government of India during 2023–2024. The scholarship covered her tuition fees and provided an annual maintenance allowance of £9,900, helping her access international education that would otherwise have been financially out of reach.

The scholarship substantially eased the financial burden on Yukti and her family and enabled her to focus on her studies and professional development. Although rising living costs abroad meant that managing expenses remained challenging, the assistance provided essential support throughout her educational journey. Selection for the scholarship also gave Yukti a significant boost in confidence, affirmed her academic potential and strengthened her belief that she belonged in a competitive international academic environment.

Through her overseas education, Yukti gained valuable international exposure and advanced academic knowledge that strengthened her professional prospects. She has since transitioned into the private sector in India, securing professional opportunities and moving towards greater economic independence. While no specific change in income has been reported, her educational achievements and entry into professional employment mark meaningful progress towards her aspirations.

Yukti’s journey demonstrates the role of the National Overseas Scholarship Scheme in promoting educational inclusion and enabling students from Scheduled Caste communities to pursue higher education abroad. By providing financial assistance for tuition and maintenance, the scheme helps deserving students overcome economic barriers, broaden their horizons and build pathways towards professional growth. Her experience reflects how government support, family encouragement and personal determination can combine to turn educational aspirations into tangible opportunities.
