For 25 years, Ms Komaragiri Ankamma has worked as a waste picker in Guntur, earning a modest income while supporting her family.

Assistance under the Swachhta Udyami Yojana (SUY) has helped her improve her livelihood and build greater financial security.

Ms. Ankamma, 45, is a member of the Scheduled Tribe community. She began accompanying her parents in waste-picking work as a child because her family could not afford her education. Limited income, difficult living conditions and social exclusion made it hard for her family to meet household needs or save for emergencies.

Working six days a week, Ms. Ankamma earned approximately Rs. 150–200 a day from waste picking. She hoped to improve her family’s living conditions and establish a more dependable source of income.

On 19 June 2023, Ms. Ankamma received support through Navajeevan Organisation as part of a five-member group project under SUY. The project cost Rs. 49,96,925, comprising a loan of Rs. 31,22,695 and an upfront capital subsidy of Rs. 18,74,230. The support helped her pursue improved livelihood opportunities.

Ms Ankamma while expressing her contentment for the support she received through the Scheme said, “Additional monthly income of approximately Rs 10, 000 has helped me strengthen family’s financial security.”

The case record reports an additional income of approximately Rs. 10,000 per month following the assistance. Using its before-and-after income figures, her monthly earnings increased from approximately Rs. 8,000 to Rs. 18,000. She can now meet household expenses more comfortably and set aside money for future needs.

For Ms. Ankamma and her family, the increase in income has brought greater stability and confidence. Her journey shows how financial support for waste pickers can help strengthen livelihoods and improve everyday living conditions.
