From Financial Constraints to Academic Empowerment: Shri Mantu Dhar's Research Journey

Posted On: 18 SEP 2026 5:09PM by PIB Delhi

Fellowship assistance can reduce financial uncertainty and allow researchers to focus more fully on their doctoral work. Access to sustained financial support can enable scholars from economically disadvantaged families to continue higher education, pursue meaningful research and realise their academic aspirations.

Shri Mantu Dhar, a 35-year-old research scholar from Paschim Medinipur, West Bengal, is pursuing a Ph.D. with support under the National Fellowship for Scheduled Caste Students Scheme. Assistance provided through the fellowship, House Rent Allowance and contingency grant has helped him continue his research despite severe financial constraints.

Before receiving fellowship assistance, Shri Mantu Dhar faced considerable difficulty in meeting admission fees and other expenses associated with higher education. His family depended on a single low-income earner, leaving limited resources for books, research materials and regular academic expenses. The lack of dependable financial support made it difficult for him to concentrate fully on his research.

He also had limited access to advanced research infrastructure and appropriate academic guidance. As no one in his family had experience of higher academia, navigating the doctoral journey was especially challenging. The long distance between his home, institution and library further restricted his access to academic resources and added to the time and cost involved in pursuing his studies.

In 2022, Shri Mantu Dhar began receiving support under the NFSC Scheme. He has received Rs. 2,96,186 through fellowship assistance, House Rent Allowance and contingency support. The assistance enabled him to meet essential academic and research-related expenses, including the cost of books and study materials, while reducing the financial burden on his family. It also gave him greater stability to focus on completing his research.

Talking about the help and support, Shri Mantu Dhar said, “NFSC support helped me continue my research and move closer to my academic goals.”

Today, Shri Mantu Dhar continues to pursue his Ph.D. with renewed confidence and determination. He aspires to complete his research and broaden his academic outlook. His journey demonstrates how timely fellowship support can help scholars overcome economic and educational barriers and pursue advanced research with dignity, stability and purpose.
