Timely fellowship support enables scholars from disadvantaged backgrounds to continue advanced studies, undertake quality research and work towards better professional opportunities. Financial constraints and limited access often interrupts academic journeys to undertake research work.

Shri Samir Makhal, a 33-year-old scholar from Howrah district in West Bengal, is pursuing a Ph.D. with support under the National Fellowship for Scheduled Caste Students (NFSC) Scheme. The fellowship has helped him meet research and educational expenses and continue his doctoral studies with greater financial stability.

Before receiving assistance, Shri Makhal faced financial difficulties that delayed his research and made it challenging to manage educational and daily expenses. Limited research opportunities, geographical constraints, family responsibilities and inadequate institutional support further affected his progress.

Despite these barriers, he remained committed to higher education and quality research. He aspired to build a successful academic and professional career and improve his socio-economic condition, even as his family faced financial instability and limited access to resources and information relating to higher education.

Shri Makhal began receiving NFSC assistance in May 2020. The fellowship, House Rent Allowance and contingency support helped him meet research expenses, educational costs and daily needs. It also improved his access to study materials, laboratory facilities and other academic resources, enabling him to focus more effectively on his doctoral work.

Following the support, his research work became smoother. Greater financial stability strengthened his confidence and enabled him to pursue his academic and career goals with renewed focus and better professional prospects.

Expressing his satisfaction over the help and support, Shri Makhal said, “NFSC support has enabled me to continue my PhD with greater stability and focus on my academic goals.”

Today, Shri Makhal continues his Ph.D. journey with determination. His experience demonstrates how the NFSC Scheme can help scholars overcome financial and educational barriers and move towards academic excellence and professional growth.
