Demonstrating the positive impact of support under the National Fellowship for Scheduled Caste Students (NFSC) Scheme, Dr. M. K. Ponselvakumari, a 34-year-old scholar from Karaikal district in Puducherry, successfully completed her Ph.D. and is now employed full-time. Her journey reflects determination, academic commitment and the enabling role of institutional support in advancing doctoral research and professional aspirations.

Before receiving assistance under the NFSC Scheme, Dr. Ponselvakumari encountered challenges in meeting the specialised requirements of doctoral research. Conducting experiments required research materials, access to different laboratories and external analytical facilities. Managing the associated expenditure while pursuing higher studies made it difficult to maintain continuity in her research work.

Accessibility between laboratories presented an additional practical barrier. The need to use specialised facilities and outsource certain analyses required both mobility and adequate resources. These circumstances also created uncertainty and mental pressure during an academically demanding phase of her journey.

Despite these challenges, Dr. Ponselvakumari remained focused on completing her Ph.D. and building a meaningful professional career. Her aspiration was to join the Agricultural Research Service (ARS) and contribute through research, knowledge and public service.

During 2017–18, Dr. Ponselvakumari began receiving assistance under the NFSC Scheme in the form of fellowship and contingency support. The assistance enabled her to procure essential research materials, undertake outsourced analyses and meet expenditure connected with her research and paper publication.

The fellowship addressed several of the practical challenges that had affected her doctoral work. It also eased the mental burden associated with arranging resources and enabled her to concentrate more fully on the quality and progress of her research.

With sustained support under the NFSC Scheme, Dr. Ponselvakumari successfully completed her Ph.D. The achievement represented an important academic milestone and strengthened her prospects for professional advancement. She is now a full-time employee, reflecting the positive transition from doctoral scholar to an independent professional.
