The meeting of the Hindi Advisory Committee of the Ministry of Rural Development was held today at Krishi Bhawan, New Delhi, under the chairmanship of Shri Shivraj Singh Chouhan, Hon’ble Minister of Rural Development and Agriculture & Farmers Welfare.

The meeting was attended by Shri Kalyan Banerjee, Shri Dharambir Singh and Smt. Anita Nagarsingh Chouhan, Members of Parliament (Lok Sabha), along with other members of the Committee and senior officers of the Ministry.

Shri Narendra Bhushan, Secretary, Department of Land Resources, and Shri Rohit Kansal, Secretary, Rural Development, apprised the Committee of the progress and achievements made in promoting the use of Official Language Hindi in their respective Departments. They highlighted the Ministry’s continued efforts to promote Hindi in official correspondence and its steady progress in this direction.

The meeting was also attended by eminent Hindi scholars nominated by various institutions as special invitees, including Shri Girish Pankaj, Shri Indra Kumar Jain, Shri Devi Prasad Mishra, Advocate Dr. B. Madhu, Dr. Narendra Kumar Sant, Smt. Kathy Rohulupuii and Shri Rajneesh Mohanot.

Members of the Committee and the invited scholars offered a number of constructive suggestions for further promoting the use of Official Language Hindi in the Ministry. The suggestions were welcomed by the Hon’ble Minister, who assured the members that they would be considered and acted upon earnestly.

Addressing the meeting, Shri Shivraj Singh Chouhan said that excessive dependence on English in government functioning reflects a colonial mindset and emphasised the need to take pride in using Hindi and other Indian languages. He noted that the Ministry of Rural Development works primarily for people living in rural areas and, therefore, its policies and programmes should be communicated to the common people in a language that is accessible to them.

Shri Chouhan described Hindi as the “soul of India and the voice of the common people” and called upon officers of the Ministry to make sincere and dedicated efforts to increase the use of Hindi in official work.

The Hon’ble Minister also directed that meetings of the Hindi Advisory Committee should be held regularly and that local litterateurs should be associated with the Ministry’s programmes to further promote Hindi. He further emphasised that correspondence with State Governments should, wherever appropriate, be conducted in their respective regional languages.

The meeting concluded with a renewed commitment to strengthening the use of Hindi and other Indian languages in the official functioning of the Ministry and in taking the benefits of rural development programmes closer to the people.
