In a major step toward accelerating decarbonization efforts and ensuring sustainable operations, Steel Authority of India Limited’s (SAIL) Bhilai Steel Plant (BSP) launched a specially designed 'CO₂ Dashboard' for Bhilai Steel Plant and Chandrapur Ferro Alloy Plant (CFP), Chandrapur. The digital platform was officially inaugurated by Shri Chittaranjan Mahapatra, Director I/c (Bhilai Steel Plant), during a special event held on 18th August 2026. The occasion was attended by Shri Rakesh Kumar, Executive Director (Works); Shri P. Murugesan, Executive Director (CFP Chandrapur); Shri Rajiv Pandey, Executive Director (EMD, Kolkata); along with senior Chief General Managers and officers from BSP, CFP, and EMD-Kolkata.

Developed in collaboration with M/s Centra World, a consultant appointed by the Environment Management Division (EMD, Kolkata), the dashboard aims to enable real-time tracking and management of carbon emissions across the enterprise. It provides accurate tracking and analysis of daily CO₂ emissions at both the plant and individual shop levels. By identifying anomalies promptly, the system allows for quick corrective measures that enhance overall operational efficiency while driving down carbon emissions across production units.

The digital platform assesses emissions in accordance with global standards, including the World Steel Association (WSA) methodology, the GHG Protocol, and the European Union's Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM). In the context of India’s evolving carbon market, the dashboard will play a vital role in helping SAIL align with the Carbon Credit Trading Scheme (CCTS) by assisting units in monitoring emission-intensity targets and preparing for market mechanisms. Furthermore, shop-level and product-level monitoring will strengthen the global competitiveness of SAIL's steel products in international markets.

Addressing the gathering, Shri Chittaranjan Mahapatra, Director I/c (BSP), emphasized that reducing greenhouse gas emissions is not merely a regulatory requirement, but a collective responsibility toward environmental protection and a sustainable future. Shri Rakesh Kumar, Executive Director (Works), highlighted that adherence to process discipline, technical standards, and quality parameters yields a dual benefit by boosting productivity while lowering costs and emissions. Shri P. Murugesan, Executive Director (CFP Chandrapur), and Shri Rajiv Pandey, Executive Director (EMD Kolkata), further stressed that reliable, standardized digital data enables targeted decision-making and timely interventions across all operating units. Ms. Ajanta Sengupta highlighted that the dashboard translates the vision of the SAIL Chairman into a simple, user-friendly tool for top management, while Shri K. Praveen, General Manager (Environment Management), conducted the proceedings and expressed gratitude to all participating departments and partner agencies.
