The Director of Census Operations, West Bengal, Shri Nikhil Pawan Kalyan, today held a press meet in Kolkata on the ongoing Census 2027 exercise and highlighted the significant participation of citizens in the self-enumeration process in the State.
Speaking on the occasion, Shri Kalyan said, the first step of the first phase, self-enumeration, has been completed, while the second step, House Listing, has commenced on August 16 and will continue till September 14, 2026. He also informed that West Bengal has recorded the highest self-enumeration in the country, with more than 53 lakh households completing the process, accounting for nearly one-fourth of the estimated households in the State. Around 93 per cent of respondents who participated in the self-enumeration process have successfully completed their enumeration.
Shri Kalyan said, during the ongoing House Listing phase, the enumerators will visit households across the State to collect the required information.
Addressing concerns of citizens who could not complete self-enumeration, Shri Kalyan said, there is no need to worry, as the House Listing phase provides an opportunity for the remaining households to participate. Citizens can also contact the toll-free helpline 1855 for assistance.
The Director of Census further informed that an enumerator sticker facility has been provided to enable citizens to identify and contact the designated enumerator in case they have missed the house-listing process. Enumerators will also revisit households that are found locked during their initial visit, ensuring that eligible households are not left out of the exercise. He also explained that the Census exercise covers not only residential households but also commercial establishments, for which a separate set of questions has been prepared to ensure appropriate data collection.
Highlighting the technology-driven nature of Census 2027, Shri Kalyan said, the Census 2027 HLO App is being used for data collection. The application has been designed to function in offline model, enabling enumerators to collect information even without continuous internet connectivity and synchronise the data subsequently.
The ongoing Census exercise marks a significant step towards strengthening the country's demographic database through enhanced citizen participation, technology-enabled data collection and systematic field-level enumeration.
