The Department of Radiation Oncology, AIIMS Guwahati, has achieved significant milestone in the field of advanced and precision radiotherapy with the successful treatment of a 20-year-old female patient diagnosed with an intracranial arteriovenous malformation (AVM) using Stereotactic Radiosurgery (SRS) technique.

The patient was diagnosed with a 10 mm × 6 mm left parieto-occipital intracranial AVM, associated with a subacute hematoma. Following detailed multidisciplinary evaluation, the AVM was found to be not amenable to conventional neurosurgical or interventional radiological treatment. Considering the clinical circumstances, the patient was successfully treated using Stereotactic Radiosurgery, a highly precise, non-invasive radiation treatment technique.

As stated by AIIMS Guwahati, this is the first reported case of an intracranial AVM treated with SRS in North-East India, representing a landmark achievement for AIIMS Guwahati and its Department of Radiation Oncology. The accomplishment demonstrates the institute’s growing capability to deliver advanced, technology-driven treatment for complex clinical conditions within the region.

Since the inauguration of the Department of Radiation Oncology, AIIMS Guwahati on 29th October, 2024 by Hon’ble Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi, the department has introduced and performed several high-end advanced treatment techniques and approaches for the first time in North-East India. These include Low-Dose Radiotherapy (LDRT) for osteoarthritis, Lattice Radiation Therapy (LRT), Scalp-Sparing Radiotherapy and other precision radiotherapy procedures.

The successful use of SRS for an intracranial AVM further strengthens the department’s assurance to expanding access to sophisticated radiation treatment technologies for patients in Assam and across the North-Eastern states in near future.
