The Department of Fisheries, Ministry of Fisheries Animal Husbandry and Dairying has been implementing the flagship scheme Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana (PMMSY) with a total outlay of Rs. 20,750 crore from 2020-21 to 2026-27 (September, 2026) for the sustainable development of fisheries and aquaculture in all the States and Union Territories including Chhattisgarh. The PMMSY scheme has significantly contributed to the development of the fisheries sector in Chhattisgarh by enhancing the financial, social, and economic security of fishermen and fish farmers through infrastructure, production, aquaculture expansion, technology infusion, support for welfare activities, market expansion and welfare interventions.

The Department of Fisheries, Government of India accorded approvals to projects under PMMSY worth Rs. 956.86 crore with a central share of Rs. 321.01 crore to Government of Chhattisgarh during last six years (2020-21 to 2025-26). Out of the approved central share, an amount of Rs. 274.16 crore was released to Government of Chhattisgarh in the last six years (2020-21 to 2025-26). In order to enhance the financial, social and economic security of fishermen, the major projects approved under PMMSY to the State are  28 numbers of Fish Seed Hatcheries, 3200 hectares of New Fish Ponds, 287 numbers of Re-circulatory Aquaculture System, 820 numbers Biofloc units, 14 nos. of Fish Feed Mills of various capacities, 511 numbers of Small Fish Transport Vehicles, 8500 Cages in Reservoirs and one Integrated Aqua Park (IAP) along with social security measures such as accidental insurance coverage of 5.52 lakh fishers annually, Livelihood and Nutritional support to 9667 fishers annually and improved access to institutional credit to 4189 fishers through the Kisan Credit Card (KCC). Collectively, these interventions have enhanced fish production (from 3.14 lakh metric tonnes in 2014-15 to 8.73 lakh metric tonnes in 2024-25), increased farmers' incomes, promoted entrepreneurship, generated rural employment, reduced post-harvest losses, and contributed to the overall socio-economic development of the fisheries sector in Chhattisgarh.
