The Office of the Controller General of Patents, Designs and Trade Marks (O/o CGPDTM) has announced that the Trade Marks Agent Examination (TAE) 2027 is likely to be held on 9 January 2027 (Saturday), while the Patent Agent Examination (PAE) 2027 is likely to be conducted on 10 January 2027 (Sunday). The examinations are proposed to be held at 15 centres across the country, namely Ahmedabad, Bengaluru, Chandigarh, Chennai, Delhi, Guwahati, Hyderabad, Indore, Jodhpur, Kolkata, Lucknow, Mumbai, Nagpur, Pune and Thiruvananthapuram.

The Patent Agent Examination is conducted by the Office of the Controller General of Patents, Designs and Trade Marks in accordance with Rule 110 of the Patents Rules, 2003 (as amended) read with Section 126 of the Patents Act, 1970 (as amended). The Trade Marks Agent Examination is conducted in accordance with Rule 144 of the Trade Marks Rules, 2017.

Both the Patent Agent Examination and the Trade Marks Agent Examination comprise three stages: Paper I consisting of objective-type multiple choice questions carrying 100 marks, Paper II comprising a subjective/descriptive paper carrying 100 marks, and a Viva Voce carrying 50 marks to assess the candidate's ability and suitability to practise before the Intellectual Property Office.

Candidates are required to secure a minimum of 50 marks each in Paper I and Paper II. A candidate shall be declared to have passed the examination only if he or she obtains an aggregate of at least 60 per cent of the total marks. Only candidates who fulfil all the prescribed eligibility criteria and qualify the examination will be eligible for registration in the Register of Patent Agents or the Register of Trade Marks Agents, as applicable.

With increasing awareness of intellectual property rights and the rapid growth of innovation, research, entrepreneurship and branding in India, the demand for qualified Patent Agents and Trade Marks Agents is expected to rise significantly. These professionals play a crucial role in securing and protecting intellectual property rights. Patent Agents assist inventors and businesses in drafting, filing and prosecuting patent applications while ensuring compliance with the provisions of the Patents Act and Rules. Trade Marks Agents facilitate the registration of trade marks, undertake clearance searches, manage intellectual property portfolios and assist applicants in protecting brand identities. They also support the registration of Copyrights and Geographical Indications (GI), thereby strengthening India's intellectual property ecosystem.

The Office of the Controller General of Patents, Designs and Trade Marks has encouraged all eligible candidates to participate in the Patent Agent Examination and Trade Marks Agent Examination 2027 and contribute to strengthening India's Intellectual Property framework.
