DGTS, Mumbai Zonal Unit in Association with B.K. Birla College, Kalyan Organised Seminar on "Understanding Basics of GST"

The Directorate General of Taxpayer Services (DGTS), Mumbai Zonal Unit, in association with B.K. Birla College, Kalyan organised a Seminar on "Understanding Basics of GST" on 05th August, 2026. The programme was organised with the objective of creating awareness among students, aspiring entrepreneurs and other stakeholders about the fundamental concepts of Goods and Services Tax (GST), promoting tax literacy and fostering an understanding of the role of taxation in nation-building, economic development and responsible citizenship.

The event commenced with the welcome address by Dr. Naresh Chandra, Director (Education), B.K. Birla College. who highlighted the importance of bridging academic learning with practical knowledge through such collaborative outreach initiatives.

Addressing the gathering, Shri Sumit Kumar, Principal Additional Director General, DGTS, Mumbai Zonal Unit, highlighted the importance of organising such outreach initiatives to equip students with a practical understanding of the fundamentals of GST and to promote tax literacy among the youth. He spoke about GST as a landmark indirect tax reform that has simplified the country's tax structure by creating a unified national market, enhancing transparency and promoting ease of doing business. He also highlighted how a sound understanding of GST strengthens academic learning while opening up career opportunities in taxation, finance, law, accountancy and public administration. He encouraged the students to actively participate in the interactive session and make the best use of the opportunity.

The session was delivered by Shri Deepak Mata, Deputy Commissioner, Office of the Principal Chief Commissioner, CGST & Central Excise, Mumbai Zone, who provided a comprehensive overview of the Goods and Services Tax (GST), covering its constitutional framework, key features, levy and collection mechanism, Input Tax Credit, GST Council, compliance requirements and emerging trends in GST. He also highlighted recent technological advancements, including the use of Artificial Intelligence and data analytics, the Invoice Management System (IMS), taxpayer facilitation measures and the evolving digital ecosystem under GST. The session concluded with an interactive discussion, during which the queries raised by the participants were addressed.

The Seminar witnessed enthusiastic participation from students, faculty members and participants.
