The Field Operations Division of National Statistics Office (NSO) under the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation, Government of India is engaged in collecting information from households and establishments since 1950 which is used for planning and policy formulation both at National and State level. During this period, it has been instrumental in developing a strong database on various socio-economic parameters through its countrywide sample surveys, which have helped the Central as well as State Governments in the process of development through planning and policy formulations.
2. Information is collected by trained officers of the NSO using hand-held digital devices (tablets) equipped with e-Sigma software and secure web portals designated for enterprise surveys. Officers visit selected households, enterprises, villages and urban blocks based on scientifically designed sampling methods. In household surveys, information is collected from the head of the household or a knowledgeable member whereas in enterprise surveys, authorized persons/owner provide the required information.

Particulars Survey. AIDIS seeks to collect information on household assets, liabilities, debt, investment, and overall financial conditions. SAS focuses on assessing the socio-economic condition of agricultural households, including income from agriculture and allied activities, cultivation costs, livestock, indebtedness, access to government schemes, and farmers' livelihoods. The Migration Survey aims to collect reliable information on the patterns and causes of migration, employment, education, marriage, and other socio-economic characteristics of migrant households.
