Kargil War veterans honoured at 83rd Fit India- Sundays on Cycle event

83rd edition of Fit India - Sundays on Cycle was organised across India with patriotic fervor today morning under the theme 'Kargil Vijay Diwas'.

The event was also organised at Gandhinagar's Swarnim park in Sector 17.

Members of the armed forces participated in large numbers in the function and Kargil War veterans were honoured on the occasion.

July 26, 2026 marks the  27th anniversary of India's decisive victory in the Kargil conflict.

The function in Gandhinagar started off with a solemn one minute silence for the martyrs of the 1999 Kargil War. A total of 527 Indian soldiers made the supreme sacrifice during the high altitude conflict that lasted for more than 80 days.

That was followed by light physical training and a high octane dance session where the participants indulged in Zumba,  Bhangra and then grooved to popular Hindi film numbers.

55 Border Security Force (BSF) and 100 Indian Air Force (IAF) personnel were joined by around 25 civilian cyclists for a cycle ride measuring 4 kms.

The cycling route included circumventing the Swarnim park, then reaching Mahatma Mandir and finally finishing the ride at SAI, NCOE Gandhinagar centre.

Civilians did not miss the opportunity to pay their respects to the armed forces as many people got themselves clicked with the soldiers. Members of the BSF's 8th battalion who participated at the Kargil War were presented momentos at the event. Momentos were also presented to IAF officials as a mark of appreciation for their presence. Dignitaries honoured included BSF Sub Inspector Harender Singh (Kargil War Veteran), Assistant Sub Inspector Sajjan Singh (Kargil War Veteran) and Assistant Sub Inspector R Srinivas (Kargil War Veteran). From the IAF,  MWO Jitender Kumar and  MWO Regi Simon were presented momentos.

After the cycle ride, the participants also indulged in sports like Chess, Carrom, Ludo and snakes and ladders  Started by Union Sports Minister Dr. Mansukh Mandaviya on December 2024, Fit India Sundays on Cycle is organised by the Sports Authority of India, Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports (MYAS) in collaboration with the Cycling Federation of India (CFI), Indian Rope Skipping Federation, Yogasana Bharat, Raahgiri Foundation, MY Bikes and MY Bharat. The cycling drive is conducted simultaneously across all States and Union Territories, including SAI Regional Centres, National Centres of Excellence (NCOEs), SAI Training Centres (STCs), Khelo India State Centres of Excellence (KISCEs) and Khelo India Centres (KICs).
