JIPMER set to Establish Two Major Centres of Excellence at Sedarapet, Puducherry Puducherry government Re-Allots the Sedarapet land to JIPMER

Posted On: 23 JUN 2026 6:44PM by PIB Chennai

In a landmark development for healthcare infrastructure in the region, the Government of Puducherry has formally re-allotted and handed over the Sedarapet land to the Jawaharlal Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education and Research (JIPMER), paving the way for the establishment of two state-of-the-art Centres of Excellence. The land documents were formally handed over by the Hon'ble Lieutenant Governor of Puducherry, Shri. K. Kailashnathan, to Prof. Dr. Vir Singh Negi, Director, JIPMER, marking a significant milestone in the Institute's long-term vision to expand advanced healthcare, medical education and research facilities beyond its main campus.

Prof. Dr. Vir Singh Negi, Director, JIPMER, expressed the Institute's sincere gratitude to the Hon'ble Lieutenant Governor of Puducherry, Shri. K. Kailashnathan, and the Hon'ble Chief Minister, Shri N. Rangasamy, for their continued support and commitment towards strengthening healthcare, medical education and research in the Union Territory. He noted that the formal handing over of the land documents marks the realization of a long-standing institutional vision. The Sedarapet land was originally allotted to JIPMER in 2018 for the development of advanced healthcare and academic facilities, following which the Institute undertook extensive planning, feasibility assessments and preparatory work for the proposed expansion. Subsequently, in 2022, the allotment underwent administrative revision and the land was resumed by the Government, necessitating fresh consultations and renewed efforts towards advancing the project.

The facilities include a Centre for Trauma Care and Rehabilitation with Air Ambulance Facility and a Centre for Organ Transplantation, envisioned as nationally significant healthcare institutions serving patients from across India.

With a combined investment of nearly ₹1,000 crore, the two centres are expected to significantly enhance JIPMER's capacity to provide specialized and affordable tertiary healthcare services while strengthening medical education, research, skill development and healthcare innovation.

Centre for Trauma Care and Rehabilitation with Air Ambulance Facility

JIPMER presently serves as a major referral centre for trauma patients from Puducherry, Tamil Nadu and neighbouring states. With increasing numbers of road traffic accidents, industrial injuries, disaster-related emergencies and complex poly-trauma cases requiring multidisciplinary management, the need for a dedicated trauma care facility has become increasingly important.

The Centre for Trauma Care and Rehabilitation with Air Ambulance Facility, with an estimated capital investment of ₹425 crore, will be developed on approximately 25.4 acres within the Sedarapet campus. The facility is planned with a capacity of 250 beds, including intensive care units, high-dependency units, dedicated trauma bays, emergency observation wards, rehabilitation services and ten advanced operation theatres.

A key feature of the centre will be a dedicated helipad and air ambulance facility, enabling rapid transportation of critically injured patients and facilitating time-sensitive emergency medical interventions. The centre will also be equipped to function as a major disaster response facility for the region.

The institution will bring together trauma surgery, emergency medicine, critical care, rehabilitation medicine, neurosurgery, orthopaedics, plastic surgery, psychiatry and allied specialties under one roof, ensuring comprehensive care for trauma victims from the point of injury through rehabilitation and reintegration into society.

In addition to patient care, the centre will serve as a national hub for training, research, trauma prevention programmes, disaster preparedness and manpower development in trauma and emergency medicine.

Centre for Organ Transplantation

The Centre for Organ Transplantation, with a capital outlay of ₹550 crore, is envisioned as a comprehensive regional hub for organ and tissue transplantation and advanced transplant sciences.

Organ transplantation remains the only definitive treatment for many patients suffering from end-stage organ failure. Despite a growing need for transplantation services across the country, access remains limited and often expensive. The centre aims to bridge this gap by providing high-quality and affordable transplant care within the public healthcare system.

The facility will have a planned capacity of 400 beds, including specialized transplant wards, intensive care units, high-dependency units, advanced diagnostic facilities and fourteen operation theatres. It will support both deceased donor and living donor transplantation programmes and will house specialized divisions dedicated to kidney, liver, heart, lung, bone marrow and reconstructive tissue transplantation.

The centre will also function as a regional hub for organ sharing, transplant coordination, organ and tissue banking, advanced training, translational research and capacity building in transplant sciences.

Once fully operational, the centre is expected to perform approximately 2,500 to 2,700 organ and tissue transplants annually, substantially improving access to life-saving transplantation services for patients from across the country.

A Regional Healthcare Hub for India

The Sedarapet facilities are envisioned to serve not only the people of Puducherry and Tamil Nadu but also patients from several southern and eastern states who already rely on JIPMER for specialized healthcare services. The Institute currently receives a substantial number of referrals from Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Karnataka, Kerala, Odisha, West Bengal, Bihar and other parts of the country, reflecting its role as one of India's leading public healthcare institutions.

The centres will further strengthen JIPMER's ability to provide advanced care to this growing patient population and are expected to emerge as major referral hubs for trauma care, transplantation, critical care, rehabilitation and related specialties in the southern and eastern regions of India.
