BIS Chennai Organizes ‘Manak Manthan’ on Draft Standard for PVC Insulated Cables and Cords

Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) organized a Manak Manthan on the Draft Indian Standard: Polyvinyl Chloride Insulated Unsheathed and Sheathed Cables/Cords with Rigid and Flexible Conductor for Rated Voltages up to and Including 1 100 V (IS 694) on 4 June 2026 at the BIS Southern Regional Office, CIT Campus, Taramani, Chennai.
Shri S. D. Dayanand, Scientist–F / Senior Director & Head, BIS Chennai, delivered the Welcome Address and highlighted the pivotal role of BIS in nation-building through standardization, quality assurance and consumer protection initiatives. He stated that, “BIS continues to strengthen the Quality Ecosystem of the country through the development of robust standards, certification systems and stakeholder engagement initiatives. Programmes such as Manak Manthan empower industries, MSMEs and consumers by providing an opportunity to actively participate in the standards formulation process, thereby contributing to the vision of a quality-conscious and self-reliant India.”
Addressing the participants and stakeholders, Shri Sandeep Kumar Kanogia, Deputy Director General (South), Bureau of Indian Standards, emphasized that Indian Standards are developed through a transparent and consultative process involving manufacturers, technical experts, industry, consumers and other concerned stakeholders, ensuring that the standards are practical, relevant and beneficial to all users. Referring to the Draft Indian Standard IS 694 – Polyvinyl Chloride Insulated Unsheathed and Sheathed Cables/Cords with Rigid and Flexible Conductor for Rated Voltages up to and Including 1 100 V, he called upon stakeholders to carefully examine the proposed modifications in the draft revision and to share their valuable comments, suggestions and technical feedback through the BIS Standards Development Portal ( www.manakonline.in and www.standards.bis.gov.in ) or via e-mail at cnbo1@bis.gov.in within the prescribed timeline. He further urged participants to actively contribute to the consultation process, noting that stakeholder inputs play a vital role in finalizing robust and contemporary standards that enhance product quality, safety and reliability while addressing the needs of both industry and consumers.

Technical Discussion on the Draft Indian Standard IS 694 and a session on BIS initiatives and e-BIS were conducted by Shri K. Sai Chandra, Scientist–C / Deputy Director, BIS Chennai. The session covered the scope and key provisions of the draft standard, requirements relating to construction, performance and safety aspects of PVC insulated cables and cords, as well as the importance of compliance with Indian Standards in ensuring product quality and consumer safety. Participants were also familiarized with various digital services available through the e-BIS platform.
The programme concluded with an Open House and Feedback Session, during which participants actively interacted with BIS officials and shared their suggestions, observations and industry perspectives on the draft standard. The programme witnessed encouraging participation from industry stakeholders, reaffirming BIS Chennai’s commitment towards supporting industries and MSMEs, promoting quality consciousness and strengthening the industry through standardization and stakeholder engagement, ultimately benefiting consumers through safer and quality-assured products. Consumers and industry stakeholders were also advised to verify the authenticity of ISI Mark, Hallmark and CRS registrations through the BIS Care App, BIS portal or by scanning QR codes, wherever applicable.
