Union Minister Shri Sarbananda Sonowal Reviews Mumbai Port Authority’s Major Development Projects across port operations, energy infrastructure, waterfront development and public facilities

Union Minister for Ports, Shipping and Waterways, Shri Sarbananda Sonowal,  reviewed Mumbai Port Authority’s major development projects during his visit to Evelyn House, Mumbai, today.

The review covered important projects being undertaken by Mumbai Port Authority to improve port operations, strengthen energy infrastructure, upgrade cargo movement, develop waterfront assets and create public facing facilities in the Mumbai Port area.

The major projects discussed included the Viksit Bharat Mumbai Marina off Princes’ Dock, Shore Protection and Reclamation at Jawahar Dweep, the New Fish Jetty at Mallet Bunder, Operations and Maintenance at Indira Dock, additional land reclamation at Jawahar Dweep, the proposed Sixth Oil Berth, interconnecting trestle between Jawahar Dweep and Pirpau, Coffer Dam removal, railway upgradation, road and shed upgradation, Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Convention Centre, MbPA Iconic Administrative Building, Central Government Office Complex, Assam Bhavan, Central Park and Event Bay.

The Viksit Bharat Mumbai Marina has been planned at Princes’ Dock with 4.2 hectares of land area and 12 hectares of water area. The project is proposed to be developed through investment by Mumbai Port Authority and the PPP route, with commencement planned in June 2026 and completion targeted by December 2030.

The Shore Protection and Reclamation work at Jawahar Dweep was reviewed as one of the important energy infrastructure projects of Mumbai Port Authority. The reclamation has been completed and the project is expected to support additional crude oil storage capacity of 2,80,000 metric tonnes. It is also expected to generate direct and indirect employment.

The proposed Sixth Oil Berth at Jawahar Dweep is planned for 2.8 lakh DWT Suezmax vessels and is expected to add 22 MTPA crude capacity. The proposed interconnecting trestle between Jawahar Dweep and Pirpau, envisaged as an offshore connection of about 5 km, is expected to support heavy cargo movement, pipeline corridor requirements and operational resilience.

Projects aimed at improving port operations were also reviewed. These included Coffer Dam removal at Indira Dock, railway upgradation with IPRCL, and road and shed upgradation with IIT Bombay. The road and shed upgradation project covers a 20 km road network inside and outside docks, with an estimated project cost of ₹500 crore over three years. The railway upgradation work has an estimated project cost of ₹300 crore.

The New Fish Jetty at Mallet Bunder, with an investment of ₹132.2 crore by Mumbai Port Authority, is expected to support the fisheries and harbour economy. Operations and Maintenance at Indira Dock has been awarded, with Cluster 1 to JM Baxi and Cluster 2 to M. Dinshaw.

The review also covered Mumbai Port Authority’s urban and public facing projects, including the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Convention Centre at Princes’ Dock, the proposed MbPA Iconic Administrative Building at Victoria Dock, the Central Government Office Complex at Cotton Green, Assam Bhavan, Central Park at Sewri and Event Bay.

The Assam Bhavan project at Cotton Green has been planned on a 1.6 acre plot allotted by Mumbai Port Authority to the Government of Assam. Located around 4 to 5 km from Tata Memorial Hospital, it will primarily serve critically ill patients and their attendants, along with students and entrepreneurs from Assam.

Speaking on the occasion, Chairperson, Mumbai Port Authority, Dr. M. Angamuthu, said, “Mumbai Port Authority is working on projects that will improve port operations, strengthen energy infrastructure, support public facilities and prepare the port for future requirements. The focus is on better use of port assets, operational efficiency, sustainability and long term value for Mumbai and the maritime sector.” Mumbai Port Authority is taking forward these projects with focus on port efficiency, energy infrastructure, waterfront development, public facilities and long term maritime growth, he added. The projects reviewed during the visit are aimed at improving operational capacity, supporting trade and strengthening Mumbai Port’s role in the country’s maritime sector.
