KAVARATTI, 13 May 2026 : In a landmark moment for Indian civil aviation and regional connectivity, the first-ever seaplane trial flight between Kochi and Lakshadweep was successfully completed today. This historic mission marks the first time a seaplane has landed in the turquoise lagoons of the Lakshadweep archipelago, opening a new chapter in the islands' transport history.

The trial was conducted using a DHC6-400 Twin Otter aircraft, registered as VT-SHE, operated by Skyhop
The aircraft successfully touched down at Agatti Island. In the afternoon the flight proceeded to Kavaratti Island, completing a flawless landing in the lagoon.
The flight carried a specialized team including two crew members, senior officials from Skyhop, and representatives from the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) to monitor performance and safety standards.

The realization of this service is the result of seamless coordination between several key agencies: the Directorate General of Civil Aviation, Lakshadweep UT Administration, Airports Authority of India (AAI), and CIAL (Cochin International Airport Limited)

At Kavaratti, the mission was received by Dr. S.B. Deepak Kumar (Advisor to the Administrator) and Dr. Giri Sankar (Director of Ports), alongside other senior officials. The landings were executed under strict security protocols with the dedicated support of the Lakshadweep Department of Ports, Shipping, and Aviation.

Following the surge in global interest after Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi’s recent visit, experts believe this seaplane service will be a game-changer for the region.
> "This service will not only provide faster and more convenient travel between the islands but will also position Lakshadweep as a premier destination for national and international tourists," officials noted.

By bridging the gap between Kochi and the remote islands, the seaplane service—the first of its kind in India to connect the mainland with an archipelago—is set to revolutionize the tourism landscape and provide a vital transport link for the local community.
